Nah, s'not really LISTMANIA. Wetherspoons' bars, the great British working class drinking public, and music. Discuss, especially as an offshoot of both the "Dance in the 00s" and "Guilty Pleasures" thread.

3. Michael Mayer - Touch

7. Ellen Allien & Apparat - Way Out

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

SOMEONE ISN'T TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

This is retarded.

Just look at the top 40 from the last five years and pick your favourites ffs.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

But, yeah:

a) Chain bars do nowadays have a Razorlight/Kaiser Chiefs/Zuton CD spinning at various points during the day. Did a similar thing happen during Britpop?
b) Is there a link between the love of R&B at this level and how rap music is dead as a commercial entity in the UK.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

Dom, when did you last go into a Wetherspoon's pub? This is about as useful a cultural barometer as Lex's sainted Kids On The Bus.

Especially as THERE IS NO MUSIC IN WETHERSPOON'S PUBS.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

omg i had the best kids on the bus moment the other day - they weren't singing along, but they were playing 'break it off' by rihanna/sean paul on their phones - i was listening to the rihanna album so i immediately synchronised! it was excellent.

9. MANDY vs Booka Shade - Body Language oh damn this doesn't work because I have actually heard it in a Wetherspoons pub

How? If Wetherspoons pubs don't play music?

Oasis / Chemical Brothers / whatever RnB was about / whatever else was in the Top 40.

b) Is there a link between the love of R&B at this level and how rap music is dead as a commercial entity in the UK.

Rap as guest spots on RnB tunes is hardly dead as a commercial entity.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

10. John Cage - 4'33

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

well, not a wetherspoons pub as such, a pub in soho which wasn't 'trendy' or whatever, it had what dom euphemistically calls "the great working class british drinking public" in it, and it also had 'body language'

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

It would have been useful to have the meat of this question in the first post instead of the tenth.

In any case, from looking at the dancefloor reaction at the dirty West End nightspot I was in for my friends' birthday party on Saturday (dancefloor = two hen nights, some leery blokes and us):

Justin Timberlake - Sexyback < Ciara - Goodies

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

Argh, that fucked up. In any case, the point I was going to make is that rnb made up maybe half the playlist but none of it got as good a reaction as Gold Digger and all of it was dwarfed by Dolly Parton 9 to 5.

So clearly the answer is:

10. A-ha - Take On Me

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

i, also, was under the impression that wetherspoons pubs did not play music.

are there any pubs that play classical music?

-- (688), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

How exactly don't Kanye & Eminiem count as Rap, Dom??

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

are there any pubs that play classical music?

Yes! The Enterprise on Red Lion Street. It works quite well. There must be others.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

That's the same as using Seth Lakeman as proof that violins are the most popular instrument in the UK these days.

xp

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

are there any pubs that play classical music?

Bartok on Chalk Farm Road!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

we should go to those pubs for a fap.

otherwise, in lieu of this thread actually going somewhere, please post on my kelly rowland thread.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Wetherspoons' now have a sub-chain that does play music. I learned this fact on another Dom P thread.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh great, another "quality" thread courtesy of Passantino.

Excuse me while I go out back and hang myself.

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)
