Great big boring moment at Woodstock

Lmaoborghini (eman), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know how to use YouTube but the ISB @ Woodstock was famously a bit of a disaster. Odd period in ISB history, between "Changing Horses" and "I Looked Up"

now i know why i never listened to the incredible strin...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

ISB was originally to have performed Friday night after Joan Baez. But they wimped out because of the heavy rains. Melanie took their place, went over real big and later wrote "Candles in the Rain" about it.
ISB got a lukewarm reception the next day in the baking sun (going between CCR and Canned Heat).

Jim M (jmcgaw), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think the fact that they were playing stuff like "When You Find Out Who You Are" (12 minute Sc1ent0l0gy inspired bollocks) didn't help much

My Mind's Not Made of Gravel (Dada), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

what's so wtf about the incredible string band clip?

Song is totally bizarro and ramshackle and goes on and on and on.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

It could have used some Santana drum soloing.

The clip of them on Beat Club from this era is great, though. They do a tune from the 1st LP. Not sure if it's still on youtube.

Lynco (lync0), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Everything's Fine Right Now! That is a good clip.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Also about the most insular thing imaginable while sitting up in front of a great field filled with a half million people or however many it was. (Not criticizing the song, btw, I love the ISB.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

One bizarre thing about the string band thing is that you have *no* confidence watching it that anyone knows how to play (especially the female drummer), nor that there is any natural structure / ending to the song. if you were stoned at a friend's party, and they were your friends, you'd still playfully ask them to stop...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

no clive palmer, no credibility

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Don't agree with Paul's comment. It's still fairly obvious on that clip that Mike is a great singer and that he has good guitar skills. And actually Rose's bass playing is good. Definitely possible that these things were lost with the wtf character of song and band modus operandi there, though. (And Robin does seem to be tinkling away at piano! : D)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

(And wtf timmy tannin? Clive is awesome, but ISB's best records were not the first one.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

(Also: lfam and eman, "The Letter" is no song by which to judge ISB in general (though it is definitely kind of grebt).)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

i know, but his greatness after leaving overshadows the ISB catalog. also, i like isb in that "omg, people actually used to be this twee & hippyish" sort of way, but it's rough going at times.

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

his greatness after leaving overshadows the ISB catalog

No agreement from me there.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

"The Letter" actually reminded me of the Fiery Furnaces, much to my dismay.
