(couldn't find a relevant thread to revive, so I started this new one)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

few weeks ago, the album finally went gold in canada and that was the final mark i really wanted to reach..

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

RIP Politening Bolt

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Fuckers. Only saw 'em twice...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

possibly had the worst name... ever.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

those poor myspace kids.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, but they got sued into it. Wanted to be Death from Above, which is at least a little bit better, but DFA (label/DJs) had prior rights.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

That last one, re: the unfortunate band name...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

Lets make love and listen to Death From AboveMSTRKRFT!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha looserss!!

Lmaoborghini (eman), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Career Retrospective Compilation CD PLZOHPLZOHPLZZZZZZZZZZ

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

possibly had the worst name... ever.

There must be literally 10,000 worse band names than that in circulation. At any one time.

DFA's first EP was great, album didn't really hold up. Hey ho

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

literally 10,000?

pffshaw!

i have honestly thought this the worst name ever since first i heard it.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

RIP Politening Bolt

OTM

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't there only 2 people in the band? Couldn't the vocalist find a new drummer? Couldn't the drummer find a new guy to play the bass and sing and call it Death from Above Revisited?

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

haha, i love all the dorks with [rip dfa1979] in their names. who the fuck cares

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

i'll bet their parents are very disappointed.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Death From Above 1979 RIP

"You were slightly better than We Are Scientists"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

I think I heard a remix.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

RIP

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

i am actually slightly sorta a little microsad about this. i really liked their album, but i'm guessing their second one would've sucked anyway.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

So much for fatwa.

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

It cracks me up how so many dorks get bent out of shape over this band.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Friday, 4 August 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

this band cracks me up. the above-mentioned james murphy jihad is exhibit A in proving the awesomeness of the internet.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Friday, 4 August 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

this was the worst band ever.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 4 August 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

They would have been much better served to be called "Death From On High".

Did I miss anything by ignoring their entire existence? I mean this semi-seriously - I never heard a note and want to know if it is worth bothering with.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Like I said, the first EP is great, although I daresay you'd have to pay a mildly extortionate amount of money for it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

You sound curious, so download a few tracks and listen to 'em. Why let some message board say-so sway you one way or the other? Spread your wings and fly.

From where I stand, they put out some excellent singles/EPs & a damn fine album, and they played some fucking crazy great live shows. Trademark of quality.

Haters score laffs calling 'em "Politening Bolt," which is funny, but meaningless. You might as well call Lightning Bolt the "Shite Stripes" (though that ain't funny at all).

LB and DFA79 were radically different bands. Comparing 'em because they were both loud/fast/noisy/hip and both had two members is worthless and weak. Lightning Bolt are pretty much a chops show. Psychedelic proggrindmathcore grand guignol. Wiggy. Catchy, maybe, but not a pop bone in their scrawny, sweat-spewing bodies.

DFA79 were a metallic, dance-influenced POP band. A hairy, greazy, coke-lust version of that conjunction, but still a hell of a long way from Lightning Bolt's technicolor space madness. While they could certainly play, the jazz-high wasn't the point, and they never indulged in spastic freak-outs just for the hell of it. You didn't get into 'em cuz, "dude! they're CRAAAAZY, dude!!!" You got into 'em cuz you dug the tunes.

Or not...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

That's a disappointment, I really dug em. Guess I'm a dork.

paid in cigarettes (paid in cigarettes), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- You're not helping.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

ilm 2006: "you're not helping."

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Terrible releases, great live band. They played on a bill after Big Business and Oxes and was able to supercede 'em, which is quite a task (well, Big Business at least.. Oxes seem bored live these days.)

Ah well.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

there is nothing wrong with an "apocalypse now" reference. whatev, RIP anyway.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I surfed over to their site and listened to a handful of tunes. They are decent, but don't seem to quite acheive what they're aiming for, if that makes any sense. They approach hooks and catchiness but don't get there, in my estimation. I would bet, however, that live they probably did open up the songs and rock more.

Don't get the Lightning Bolt comparisons. Not really noise - they are like heavy disco or something. I think they sound like "Stalker" by Urge Overkill.

Still would have rather they were called Death From On High.

Which one is in Mr. Mxyzptlk again?

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

dudes, i thought everyone knew LB were a dance band.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

What's with all the hatin'? This thread prompted me to throw on the CD for the drive to work today. I still think it's good.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I don't hate them. What I've heard has left me less than whelmed, but I just happen to find the put-down more than a little amusing. Accept my apology for unfair snarking.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

at any rate, they were/are much better than MSTRKRFT.

Quinn (quinn), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

I surfed over to their site and listened to a handful of tunes. They are decent, but don't seem to quite acheive what they're aiming for

i never came across the Death From Above 1979 Mission Statement...

They were good for a frantic listen on occasion, but could never supplant, say, Hot Snakes--a band who, for me, served the same purpose.

J. Grizzle--Here Comes Treble (trainsmoke), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

hot snakes - now that's a shitty band name.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Hot Snakes On A Plane!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

ANYTHING with a dangerous animal(s) in it is a shitty band name.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: the Scorpions and Great White?

hot snakes leaving on a jet plane

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

Death From Above Airport '79!

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

there are docile snakes...but i guess if they were piping hot, there could be inherent problems

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: neither do much for me, sorry. At least they aren't Wolfcrimes.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Death from hot snakes leaving on a jet plane above!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

death from hot snakes lea......

screw it. you win.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 4 August 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

I surfed over to their site and listened to a handful of tunes. They are decent, but don't seem to quite acheive what they're aiming for

i never came across the Death From Above 1979 Mission Statement...

They appear to be trying for a rave-up heavy dance thing, and seem to fail at being particularly heavy or danceable (beyond a sort of spazzy, twitchy, indie head-nodder kind of way. I mean you theoretically can dance to anything - I claim to have once successfully danced to Zep's "The Crunge"). As Fandango said above, I don't hate them, but they're underwhelming. I found nothing to make me wish to explore further, excepting maybe to see them live which is no longer possible.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

CHALLENGE.

'you can theoretically dance to anything'

*puts on Merzbow's 'Pulse Demon' and attempts to dance*

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

awww. well, i quite liked 'em. that remix of 'black history month' off the remix album is pretty tight.

Emily B (Emily B), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

Always thought they were a rhythm section without a reason. That may be good. That may be bad. Did they play Conan? Because I'm sure I wrote them off based on a Conan O'Brien performance.... is that possible?

Also if someone makes you change your name because it's taken, don't be an ass, have enough fucking imagination to get a new name. This goes for Blink 182 as well. Assheads.

Off topic: All you all's new band is called Rhythm Without Reason.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Saturday, 5 August 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

if i had the resources i would fly a plane into his skull.

Words of an asshead. Assheads.

*starts a band called The Beatles 1980*

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Saturday, 5 August 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Did they play Conan?

they did. at one point the drummer got up and started (just) singing and max weinberg started playing drums.

i don't think anyone in here was touting these guys as band of the decade, or deeply lamenting their breakup. But they could have done a lot worse...should ilm be dedicated only to rock and roll hall of fame inductees, or is it acceptable that we sometimes discuss these 'lesser' musicians?

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Saturday, 5 August 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

c'mon, dudes, every generation needs a billy squier. even if it's two french canadian guys.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 20:22 (eleven years ago)

nine years pass...

my kid is opening for this band on friday. you should go! in montreal. so, apparently, they are still a band! they are playing three nights in montreal. they really bring me back to the days of the pitchfork website. (not that i've ever heard them...) but they remind me of those days when everyone was their own pet.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 16:07 (two years ago)

ten months pass...

i've wanted to see this band for about 20 years, and theyre playing 'you're a woman' start to finish in order on this tour... i'm so fucking psyched!

maelin, Tuesday, 25 June 2024 10:53 (one year ago)

saw them once and had a blast. love a good two-piece with more energy than a full band.
