Who came up with the hand-drumming, Bonham or Wyatt?

Or was it someone else? I was watching the Grides-dvd from 71 where Robert Wyatt starts hammering with his palms and thought it would be great if Bonham stole it.

I think some black dude started it.

Hand drummers.

My god, you're right! But who was the first to use that 4millionyearoldtrick in modern rock then?

strom (strom), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Does it matter? It sounds terrible, looks terrible and is generally just terrible.

Surely somebody in Kaleidoscope had already gotten bored with this trick by the time Bonzo and Bob got around to trying it.

I know that Tommy Aldridge claimed in an interview that he was doing it before he saw Bonham doing it.

That doesn't mean that Bonham stole it, rather that the two of them could have come up with the habit independently.

I think the poster meant who first played the trap drum kit with their hands. Anyway, Papa Jo Jones did it way before Bonham or Wyatt, and if you search his name on YouTube, you might find a clip of it. Not sure if he was the first though.

Yeah, but what the question appears to ask is pretty hilarious.

I can remeber playing a trap set with my hands and thinking I was so clever.

drummer from freedom's children did this when they played live. HIS HANDS WOULD BE BLOODY BY THE END. but that doesn't make listening to a drum solo any more interesting.

OTM

This is pretty awesome though (hand drumming starts about 37 seconds in):

Thanks, Hurting, that was cool. Last night I looked through the Jo Jones chapter in Drummin' Men and, while it mentioned the hand drumming in passing, it didn't really say too much about it. It did say that he pretty much originated some other things like, um, keeping time on the hi-hat.

He was clearly great as a performer too - that clip is like watching Fred Astaire play the drums.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's amazing, and in such nonchalant style.

I can drum with my teeth, though! Is that a recognised percussive style and are there any other practitioners?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, exactly. In fact, I think it has been said that when he was soloing he would invoke one tap dancer or another that he had worked with in some traveling carnival in his early days in showbiz- in fact I think he did some dancing himself. I think it was said in that book I was looking at last night.
