Imagine that you wanna give a newbie an overview of American alternative/indie-rock music from the golden age (circa mid-80's to mid-90's). What tracks would you choose?

Aditya (dan138zig), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

Pixies - "Debaser", "Break My Body"
Pavement - "Silence Kit"
Slint - "Breadcrumb Trail" or "Nosferatu Man"
Spacemen 3 - "Suicide"
My Bloody Valentine - "Come In Alone"
The Dandy Warhols - "Ride", "Dandy Warhols TV Theme Song"
Blur - "Girls and Boys"
Nirvana - "Blew"
I wanna say "There She Goes" by the La's, does that count?
A good percent of the Rhino Records "Left of the Dial" box set, being sure to include the tracks by both Stone Roses and Happy Mondays ("She Bangs the Drums" and "24 Hour Party People", respectively)
and I'm sure a million more. You can't distill this into one 120 minute cassette tape.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Swans - "New Mind"
Butthole Surfers - "Sweat Loaf"

Faith No More - "Be Aggressive"

Sonic Youth - "Teen Age Rocket"

pretend Ride is American and put on "Cheslea Girl"
something Smashing Pumpkins, your call ("Cherub Rock", perhaps)

I'll post more when I think of them.

notable omissions so far:

-built to spill
-modest mouse
-neutral milk hotel

Aditya (dan138zig), Sunday, 6 August 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'll put in a word for
Redd Kross - "Play My Song," "Dumb Angel"
Superchunk - "Cadmium," "Slack Motherfucker"
Built to Spill Caustic Resin - "When Not Being Stupid Is Not Enough"

I don't really think of Soundgarden as fitting in with this stuff but if they do, please something other than "Black Hole Sun." "Jesus Christ Pose" is the obvious one. "Face Pollution" and "4th of July" are less obvious. And if those are to be included, then definitely some Faith No More, maybe "Land of Sunshine."

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 7 August 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

And Alice In Chains - "Man In the Box" along the alt-metal pop lines too.

velocity girl - my forgotten favourite

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Monday, 7 August 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

If I had to OPO Soundgarden track, I'd actually go with
"Fell On Black Days" or "Boot Camp," but that's just me.

I have to add just one track: The Rain Parade, "Halloween."
The Rain Parade were a jaded, loose sounding band that
occupied a no man's land between Syd Barrett and Camper Van
Beethoven. They were slightly amateurish but VERY good
songwriters. "Halloween," in particular, isn't just
"essential american alternative," it's just plain essential.

aarrgghh, let's just call it the indie-rock guitar sound.

Aditya (dan138zig), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

English stuff has to be included, 'cuz nailing the moment is more important than protecting the national hymen. The "American Indie Epoch" was in large part defined by music from the U.K...

Mission of Burma - Academy Fight Song ('81)
Black Flag - Six Pack ('81)

Violent Femmes - Add It Up ('83)
Minutemen - Little Man With a Gun In His Hand ('83)
Replacements - Within Your Reach ('83)
Smiths - Reel Around the Fountain ('84)
Husker Du - The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill ('84)
Meat Puppets - The Whistling Song ('84)
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Never Understand ('85)
Butthole Surfers - Lady Sniff ('85)
Big Black - Fists of Love ('86)

Pussy Galore - Allright! ('87)
Pixies - Bone Machine - ('88)

Teenage Fanclub - The Concept ('91)
Pavement - Summer Babe ('92)
Built to Spill - Twin Falls ('94)

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Addenda:

Camper Van Beehoven - Take the Skinheads Bowling ('86)
Superchunk - Slack Motherfucker ('90)
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville ('93)
Beck - Loser ('94)
Guided By Voices - I am a Scientist ('94)

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

1. If you only wanted stuff that you describe as 'jangly' or 'ringing,' then you should've made that clearer.

2. Anthony, the difference is that now knowing the names of a bunch of shite songs is excusable. Putting the Dead Kennedy's on a list about American alternative music from 85-95 is inexcusable.

3. Whoever listed the entirety of the Empire Records Sdtrk, you made me laugh.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I include the DKs, and I'm sticking with it. I think the 85-95 timeline is absurd. When we're talking about the "American alternative/indie thing," we're talking about a specific movement that at the time was more commonly described in terms of "College Rock" or "Independent Rock".

The defining music of this "movement" occurred between about '81 and the very early 90s. But in trying to define it, I think you have to pay at least a little attention to the music that it came out of, and the music that was coincident with it. Hence, the quirkier edges of California punk, and therefore the DKs. I mean, it's hard to talk about this stuff without roping in Public Enemy, NWA and the Beastie Boys, too...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, and the DKs have a lot to do with PE, NWA and the Beasties? No fucking way.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

No, of course not. But the DKs has a hell of a lot to do with creating a market for independent music in America, and were popular on college radio in the early 80s.

Similarly, PE, NWA and the Beasties were popular with the same self-consciously "eclectic" college kids who were rocking the Pixies and Sonic Youth, or at least that's how I remember it. Slayer, too, for what it's worth. But those are other movements, so I think it's fair to relagate them to the margins of this "comp."

DK's, on the other hand, have to stay. If it weren't for Alternative Tentacles and SST, it'd have been a very different decade...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

adam you are missing the point of the constraints of the thread

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but DK's and NWA are not alternative/indie rock.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Of course NWA aren't indie rock. I was trying to point out that sometimes on a comp like this you might only wanna include "the thing itself", and sometimes you might wanna include other indicators, to establish context and connections.

But while DK's and Black Flag are textbook "punk," they gave way to the Butthole Surfers and Husker Du, which in their era, were textbook "independent rock music." The continuum of rock, man...

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also the DK's suck eggs.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Touché.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

The DK's are the best american 'hardcore' band.

Adam, I understand your reasoning about NWA and PE and that sort of stuff. But I don't think that the DK's have all that much to do with what we're talking about here... Alternative Tentacles certainly. But the DK's? No.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 7 August 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

The DK's are the best american 'hardcore' band.

I think a lot of people will disagree with you on this one.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Germs
Minor Threat
Black Flag
Circle Jerks
Bad Brains

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

English stuff has to be included, 'cuz nailing the moment is more important than protecting the national hymen. The "American Indie Epoch" was in large part defined by music from the U.K...

If I include stuff from the UK than the list would be too big and sprawling all over the place. Let's just limit it to the so-called college rock bands. So in that case, DK, Black Flag, NWA, etc. must go too.

Aditya (dan138zig), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Your concept is already too big and sprawling, the Brits aren't going to fuck it up any more.

You've got your 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' indie-rock (Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Replacements, Dino Jr., etc.) in the early to mid '80s.
Then you've got the sludgy heavy grunge/proto-grunge in the late-80s and early-90s.
You've got your jangly dream-pop (Mazzy Star/Opal, Velocity Girl)
Twee
Riot Grrl
Grunge
Alternative Rock for the Ladeeez (Juliana Hatfield)
Alt-Pop
and by '95 you've got the grunge also-rans headlining the alterna-rock festival near you).

Besides, it's hard to think of early '90s alt-rock without PJ Harvey's first album.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

That's why i wrote "essential" in capitals. Because stuff like Mazzy Star, Velocity Girl, Juliana Hatfield, grunge, are not that essential compared to the "Our Band Could Be Your Life" bands.

Aditya (dan138zig), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

riiiight

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

ahahaha sorry but this mixtape is for a complete newbie. why give him/her lesser known bands like velocity girl.

Aditya (dan138zig), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

Because lesser-known doesn't always equate to not-as-good/important/relevant?

You seem to have a very specific idea of what you want on this tape, which makes trying to help you a bit tricky.

If it's all about the jangle, you might want some Lemonheads on there.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:07 (nineteen years ago)

OK there should be mooooore than enough stuff people have listed to fill a 120 minute tape that meets this ever-specific criteria. Are we then satisfied? Can we move on? This really shoudln't be that difficult...

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i think all the tracks needed have already mentioned. thanks, guys!

Aditya (dan138zig), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

I hope whoever gets the tape gets some good stuff out of it. Post the finalized tracklist when it's done.
