Both the new songs I've heard (Dorothy at 40,Bad Sects) are pretty great. I hear the whole album has already leaked, is the rest of "Happy Hollow" this Good/Bad?

thats all anyone has to say?

xpost, August 22, i think.

i mean, those two songs are much different from other kasher material. Stronger stories, broader topics.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- While indie rock band Cursive played one of the nine stages at the Lollapalooza music festival, a nearby air-conditioned tent was packed with people checking their e-mail, updating their blogs and charging their cell phones.

Some milled about waiting for a laptop with wireless Internet access to free up. Others plopped down on couches and watched satellite television -- or a live feed of Cursive, performing just outside.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

blog-"I wasn’t really paying attention at first during the setup, except to note that there were mics with plastic shields so there would be horns. All of the sudden I hear someone in the crowd exclaim something along the lines of “THERE IS A FUCKING CELLO ON THE FUCKING STAGE.” Yep, no Gretta, but there was a female cellist there. Can it get any better? Cursive with a three-piece horn section, slide guitar, and a cello. "

You have kinda shot yourself in the foot there man, they are both better than Cursive.

I want 5 reasons why Cursive sucks. for realz.

cursive is pretty good compared to the rest of saddle creek stuff.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

"The martyr". Starts off with by numbers "post-hardcore" twiddlings. Singing that sounds a bit like Del Amitri, then a bit of "duh nah nah" bar chordery. A cheesey chorusy bit with the unfortunate lyric "Sweet baby, don't cry, your tears are only alibis". EMO EMO YUCK YUCK! A bit of "we wish we were ATD-I". Back to the twiddly. Actually the twiddly is quite "we wish we were ATD-I". Chorus. Then a real "earnest" repetition of "the martyr" as a closing refrain. Absolute shite.

jimnaseum - formalist rigour! (jimnaseum), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

im pretty sure tim kasher was making records when atdi were in dipers

Yeah but he wasn't making that record.

jimnaseum - formalist rigour! (jimnaseum), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, you can't hardly win, can you?

you are either cool and obscure or popular and devoid of subtlety.

And im not really talking about "The Martyr" or any of Domestica for that matter. The only thing I will say is this: the words "EMO EMO YUCK YUCK" say nothing about Cursive themselves, and don't really pass for criticism in my book.

What I am saying about the new album is that it doesn't seem to be concerned with the typical Cursive/Good Life topics. Its looking at (omaha?) society as a whole. At least, so I imagine until i hear the album in full.

Franny, but not Zooey (Franny, but not Zooey), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

Everything I've heard from Cursive is dry as dust. Like eating Baked Lays only without that outrageously rich taste.

I mean, the topic of male impotence, sexual jealousy (cuckoldry), has informed some of the best works of literature (othello, the winters tale, Proust, The Last Duchess). So why does an album that deals with those topics get termed EMO EMO YUCK YUCK?

I mean, Domestica isn't exactly a Story of the Year record, ya dig?

Franny, but not Zooey (Franny, but not Zooey), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

dan, did you know garfield is dead :(. anyway i heard bunnybrains is touring with the good life this winter.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

garfield died?
u mean at th box office i hope.....what is the good life?

I don't even know what to say about this giant leap of reasoning.

jimnaseum - formalist rigour! (jimnaseum), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

well, say something. other then just acting so holier-than-thou.

(and i am in no way saying that Domestica is as *good* as anything i mentioned)

Franny, but not Zooey (Franny, but not Zooey), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

actually, the winter's tale is a bit poo. honest.

Garfield Is Dead. The Good Life is Cursive guy's other band.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

xpost, I like how Leontes goes insane in the beginning (magically becoming both Othello and Iago in one human being), but i don't really like the pastoral aspects of it.

Franny, but not Zooey (Franny, but not Zooey), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

actually to be fair the 3-act tragedy is miles better than the lameass unfunny 2-act comedy and yeah it is genuinely tragic. if WS had fleshed it out into a bona fide 5-act tragedy it would have been swell, but as it stands, it's too superficial.

he becomes like iago? uh? iago is the manifestation of Shakespeare in his own play, the puppet-master, the motiveless manipulator, leontes is never like that.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

domestica is very good - probably the last good 'emo' album made, before taking back thursday's chemical romance etc took over.

ugly organ is ok, a bit heavy handed but has a few standout tracks.

"dorothy at 40" sounds promising. i played it on my radio show the other week.

i bet if cursive didn't have a bunch of bright eyes lovin' messenger bag wearin' mopey twits as fans they'd get a lot more credit. however, cursive and the faint are the only saddle creek bands i can deal with.

He's dead.

I don't know Cursive. I liked one or Faint songs, I just remember some fat synths pumping to prurient lyrics.

Cursive appear to be booked to play the Sugar Club in Dublin, so they can't be expecting too much...
EMO EMO YUCK YUCK is a great genre name. "File under EMO EMO YUCK YUCK"

Listening to cursive myspace song. Bleugh.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Monday, 7 August 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

i can't stop fantasizing about a version of "The Martyr" where "your tears are only alibis" is replaced by "we wish we were ATD-I"

I think "Radiator Hums" is a pretty great single, and I remember hearing enough of Domestica six years ago to be mildly impressed with the rest of it, too. Happy Hollow doesn't do anything for me, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

domestica was a little hit or miss, but occasionally struck a winning note with standouts like 'making friends and acquaintances' and the 'the night i lost the will to fight'. it's most ineffective when it vies for moods it can't achieve ('shallow means, deep ends' features an over earnest kasher screaming trivialities like they're gospel)

the ugly organ, however, is an outstanding release. it is lyrically mature and remarkable, it's musically rich and exciting, it has a certain edginess and unpredictability that does it a lot of favours. highlight: sierra "my little girl we could have been so oh nevermind"
