There are two things wrong with this thread's premise.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

maybe he's only heard those two.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

Wyclef is without question the best rapper ever who can sing in 4 languages and play a respectable guitar solo with his teeth. His rapping is also underrated.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

But not as much as his production, or his vision, or his persona

i don't even think i've heard the carnival since my sophmore year of college.

i did have to hear "the ecleftic" last year :-(

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, the first half of carnival is pretty good, too!! "apocalypse" / "guantanamera" both pretty good in world-music-type-rap-my-55-y.o.-dad-likes-style, "bubblegoose" / "to all the girls" go down nice in pharcyde-or-digable-planets-summery-second-album style, "anything can happen" / "year of the dragon" is as good as classic fugees or "miseducation of lauryn hill", and, uh, "stayin alive".

anything else is pretty lame and too many skits but hey! 7 good tracks ain't bad for a northeast rap album in the 00s!!

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

Carnival = very much classic,

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

do the names PRINCE or JERRY REED mean anything to you?

i have heard of this PRINCE. he is quite possibly the worst rapper in the world. (and what are the four languages he can sing in?)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

you know i was joking the first time or two about the hating-your-parents thing, but it's really starting to look like it's true

MARK MCGRATH STILL BEST ROCK N ROLLER SINCE STING

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

But actually, Jabba Jabba or whatever is pretty OTM about The Carnival, it's a great record, I think very much overlooked now although at the time it was getting praise out the wazoo. "Anything Can Happen," yes! And I actually kind of like a lot of the non-rap, summer jam-band festival stuff on there, "Yele" and "Gunpowder" and "Jaspora." Really, cut out ALL the skits and reshuffle the tracks and people would be namechecking it all the time, it has a ton of quality material. Wyclef can tell a good story in rhyme, and even if he's short on the zingers he occasionally will drop some little phrase that paints a big picture. "I drive into Jersey to escape the terror."

Search also: "Cheated (Rock Remix)" which isn't a remix at all but a completely different song, Wyclef doing some sort of classic rock pastiche. It succeeds both as parody and as song.

Oh, and "Gone Til November"!

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

i never had carnival, but i feel like i knew most of the tracks. i always liked "street jeopardy" haha, and i had a skate video that used "apocalypse" very effectively in the opening sequence (slo-mo, b&w)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

For every good song Wyclef puts out, he'll go and do something stupid like produce an album for Tom Jones. A graph showing his career goodness would be very uneven indeed.

Bubblegoose was the shit for the same reason Nappy Heads remix was the shit ---- Salaam Remi.

Same for Bush Babees Remeber We remix. This track still smokes and stands head and shoulders above their catalog.

Pras was the best rapper since Lucas with the Lid Off

Sir Dr. Rev. PappaWheelie Jr. II of The Third Kind (PappaWheelie 2), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Radio DJ's are always pleased when the Fugees release a new song and Pras' verse is last, means they only have to cut out the last bit rather than mess around removing his verse if it's in the middle of the song.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 10 August 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

Wyclef proves that you can get a gold star for effort if you're ambitious but not particularly talented. He's got his hands in a little bit of everything and sucks at all of it.

Public Radio (public_radio), Thursday, 10 August 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

That performance of "If I Was President" on Chappelle's Show, C/D?
I say fucking cringeworthy.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Wyclef & Connor Oberst should tour in support of DEM PARTY 08.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that song is still probably better than "When The President Talks To God", but that Chappelle performance with all the contrived dread shaking and the cat-coughing-up-a-hairball-noise he keeps making, ugh.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Did you see Block Party? He does a version on an organ at a school with a bunch of kids, totally way better.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, not yet.
Does he still keep making that noise? I realize that the hairball/death rattle thing is something Bob Marley sorta did sometimes, but when 'clef (over)does it lacks any subtlety and seems like a pointless affectation. Drives me nuts.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

I thought his version of "Fortunate Son" was pretty good.

Late at night, the light was bright on the ave
I went to pick up cash from my cousin, little Kev
He told me Joe had a dream until he got steamed
His wife became a fiend, fuckin' little Rahim
Damn...drugs will make you do terrible things
He told me when he get out, he's murderin' by any means
The day came; I saw him on the train
He pulled his gun and aimed, and started firin' like a son of Cain
I saw civilians, runnin' for they life
Like the devil, on Judgment Night, runnin' from Christ
"Ice and amaretto, please," as I fell to my knees
Bein' shot by Ferguson the vigilante.
