Well, it was always burnin', since the world's been turnin'. I think Joel's point was that reality blazes forward with one dramatic event after another, and not only is this nothing new; it is a cosmic principle. Was it Heraclitus who said 'All is powered by the thunderbolt'? Perhaps he was making the same point. This song is intended to be, i think, a wake up call for the baby boomers, for whom Joel is a sort of pop poet: he's saying, hey, history rexisted before us, and will exist after us.

Marmot OTM with first response, thread could well have been locked there, although props to rattus for making me think for a whole ten seconds that maybe Billy Joel had actually thought this song through and wasn't just naming a bunch of random crap in anticipation of the "One Week" phenomenon where the number of records you sell is in exact proportion to the number of high-profile name drops in your song....

Whoa. That makes a LOT of sense. Suddenly I have respect for Billy Joel.

As to who started the fire: IT WAS GOD. AND IT BEGAN WITH A SINGLE BUSH. BURN BABY BURN, PRE-DISCO INFERNO.

MINOR DETAILS.

And yes, I suppose I should've said "shrub" instead of "bush" and hey, these are just thoughts. Why don't we ask Billy Joel whom he feels started the fire? Anyone here with connections to the Long Island Police Department?

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Friday, 11 August 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

This song seems heavily influenced by a certain Tim Curry song of the late 70s. So Tim started "We Didn't Start," though not the actual fire: that was MELZBOLLAH (Gibson), warming up.

don (dow), Friday, 11 August 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

Now that I reflect on this, the song does say "it was always burnin' since the world's been turnin'." So really, on this view, the big bang/God started the fire.

I still think it was Hendrix (though I'm sad that I fluffed up that photo).

God = kind of lame at times. Hendrix = awesome.
