Has Pharrell done anything even remotely interesting and/or big since 'Can I Have It Like That' came out a year ago?

Obviously the album doesn't qualify. Really, has he had any bangers since 'Can I Have It Like That'? And did he/The Neptunes even have anything between that one and 'Drop It Like It's Hot' from 2004?

Just sat there and thought about his recent hits - and couldn't remember any, apart from the recently sorta half-released 'Mamasita' w. Daddy Yankee. That was pretty good. Anything else? No, right? Is he working on some time-consuming Gwen Stefani project? Or is he just struggling to come up with something? Should be interesting to know...

I like "Vato," but it's not exactly a banger.

"Mr. Me Too"
"Vato"
"Say Something"
"Cocaine"
"Wamp Wamp"

etc. etc. etc.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

The Gwen Stefani album came out after the Snoop album, the only other thing I can think of is "Say Something" by Mariah Carey and, indeed, "Mr. Mee Too".

A new Neptunes-produced Usher song just leaked. It's shit though.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Neptunes no longer topping the charts; story at 11

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

The Neptunes have indeed been a bit shit for a while now, but listened to Mr Me Too again today and that blows my fucking head off. Even with yer bog-standard Pharrell verse.

'In My Mind' is definitely one of the worst records I've heard all year though, although I do like 'Raspy Shit'.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

I am highly in love with the smoove-R&B thing they've been doing more heavily the past couple years. "Can I Have It Like That" is horrible, btw.

that Fam-Lay "Skrunt Owt" beat is pretty good

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 10 August 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Neptunes have done plenty of album tracks in the past year (T.I., LL Cool J, a couple for Twista, one of which was surprisingly good) N.O.R.E.'s "I'm A G," the Sleepy Brown single, and that new Ludacris song is probably going to be pretty big. I haven't really thought of them as having been "away" (although I wish they would go away) because of all the Pharrell solo bullshit, and the fact that they probably produced all or most of the upcoming Clipse album.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 10 August 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

As I listened to In My Mind last night for the first time, I thought of two things:

1) When was the last time anyone saw Chad Hugo?

and

2) When Pharrell talks about all his jewlery and boats and shit, he seems really bored with it. The only times he expresses any real emotion or feelings (other than "I HAVE A BONER AND AM WILLING TO USE IT") is when he talks about his dead grandmother or how he was mistreated in high school. So, basically, it made me wonder, is Pharrell depressed? Does dude need a hug?

Subquestion: If someone hugs him, will he please stop polluting his beats with those terrible-sounding misplaced snare hits? I will hug him for that.

he is sort of busy helming an extremely lucrative fashion brand!!

varsity jkt - $1280
butt ugly jeans - $290
swarovski studded t-shirt - $500
very random t-shirt - $92
i would wear this if i was actually from baltimore - $75

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Thursday, 10 August 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

but why would you make a new era w/ a big "B" on it, if you were from virginia beach?? shouldn't he have called his brand, like, VULCAN ALLIANCE or something like that?

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Thursday, 10 August 2006 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

and yes people actually buy this shit. young jeezy on leno = head-to-toe BBC.

Weirdly enough I have actually warmed up to his album, after hating it at first. It works pretty well as background music.

Pharell is apparently very concerned with pollution, as you will learn if you listen to the song he's singing on off the new Cassius album (i know, wtf? actually, it makes sense when you think of the pedro winter nigo alliance, and that pharell is apparently trying to steal uffie away from feadz). it is an unironic (but possibly funny and possibly insanely good or horrible?) ode to conservation, awareness and a hopeful plea for a reasonable future (ha ha?).

Oh and "I Gotcha" by Lupe Fiasco. That beat is totally insane.

Talking with Nabisco about his many projects

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

Now that is a fine interview.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

The profile stuff in the interview is great. Although he kind of gingerly covers the change from when Neptunes songs were top of the charts through to NERD and other later efforts:

That sound inevitably lost some of its purchase on the charts, by which point the Neptunes were already diversifying into new enterprises anyway; by the turn of the decade, they were recording and touring with their live band, N*E*R*D, and Williams was working on projects like the soundtrack for the animated film Despicable Me (or, as of last year, helping score the Oscars broadcast). Lately, though, he’s back to accumulating high-profile solo production and songwriting credits, and some of the songs they’ve been attached to have strayed far from the frosty, snap-and-clack appeal of the old Neptunes sound: They’ve been, one notices, pretty lush.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

“and there was a lot of minimal stuff for so long. It was like: Boom. Pssh. And I could just”—he makes that snare sound again, this time miming a gun to the head. “It was just too much. So I needed color. Everybody else was like steely, minimal. I was like color, rainbow, many different versions of the rainbow. Rainbow, but with tertiary colors. Rainbow, gingham print.”

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)

Gingham print = Little House on the Pharrell

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 17:46 (twelve years ago)

not clear from article: is he still working with chad hugo? and if not, when did they break up?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

google says that Chad dj'd Pharrell's recent birthday party.

Chad is also doing this:

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 18:14 (twelve years ago)

Chad is still a full partner in N.E.R.D. co-writing/producing/performing everything (last album was 2 and a half yrs ago but i think they've toured more recently than that), does stuff w/ Kenna and other Star Trak acts, co-produces with Pharrell still occasionally (last thing i can think of is the Pusha/Tyler single). so i get the impression there was never a break and they just don't feel the need to be constantly teamed up. xp

Will use the opportunity to rep for this Pharrell produced single from last year. Very lush and didn't really made any waves anywhere (too inoffensive I guess) but I love it.

HFS. someone needs to make like a 3- or 4-disc "best of" out of all this stuff. i don't even know that my HD can fit like thirteen separate neptunes boxed sets.
