Buch of Olivia Tremor Control songs.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Saturday, 12 August 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

OMG for the second night in a row someone starts a thread by mentioning one of my favourite songs. 1992...don't quite see the Barrett connection (Syd? Space-age effects pedals? Self-indulgent lyrics about an ex-girlfriend?) but great song, best on 13.

It's Not Too Beautiful by The Beta Band would be my pick. Either that or Beck's amazing Cold Brains.

xpost OTM, Goldberg. 'Train Director' being my personal fave.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Saturday, 12 August 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

I love Define a Transparent Dream. And I Have Been Floated. Those are rather Barrett-ish. It's obviously psychedelic-Beatles-influenced, too, but stuff like the spliced in noise bits and out of tune strings on Floated would've been a little too out there for The Beatles, I think.

The Soft Boys - Kingdom Of Love

zeus (zeus), Saturday, 12 August 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

the 1992 connection is the odd chord changes leading to hooks you'd just never expect.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Saturday, 12 August 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

plus, yes, the squealing guitars

Fetchboy (Felcher), Saturday, 12 August 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

hmm. It's not something I'd have ever really called, but actually, as that brief, bizarre keyboard solo plays all over the guitars I begin to see what you're getting at. Syd Barrett to William Orbit still seems a link too far though; the guitar sounds that make the last three minutes of the song what they are just aren't Barrett.

XTC: "Towers Of London" and "Senses Working Overtime"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 12 August 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Senses Working Overtime" sounds more like Sesame Street than Syd Barrett.

Another Robyn Hitchcock- "Madonna of the Wasps"

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 13 August 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

No disrespect for the dead intended, but Barrett - great as he was / is - never wrote a song half as good as "Madonna of the Wasps," friends.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 13 August 2006 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

Robert Wyatt - "The Duchess"

He'd later go on to collaborate with Gilmour on Momentary Lapse of Reason, for better or worse.

The Homosexuals-The Total Drop, or maybe something else

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 13 August 2006 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

A. More is too precise

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 August 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

I reckon "French Film Blurred" by Wire is plenty Syd-like. Hi Andrew!

LC (Damian), Sunday, 13 August 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

"In The Beginning/The Thing" by (wait for it)...the 1910 Fruitgum Company. From their final album, HARD RIDE, which was their balls-out attempt to go psychedelic.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought that the Verlaines song "Burlesque" sounded like Syd era Floyd.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 18 August 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Super Furry Animals - "Zoom"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 19 August 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

the shins - "weird divide"

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 28 September 2006 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...

Just rediscovered the first album by Bipolaroid "Transparant Make Believe", who are basically a Syd Barrett tribute band when you get right down to it. Not Great or Classic, but definitely enjoyable.

They have a new album due out this year...seems like a band who could potentially put out something really terrific (though they probably won't). Fingers crossed.

goodly portions of the village green preservation society. e.g., "phenomenal cat," "wicked annabella" and "down by the riverside" DEFINITELY could've been syd barrett songs
