a REALLY beautiful song that gets left out of the "pop canon" nowadays even though everyone on earth has covered it.

you're killing me, larry! (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 August 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

now and forever, bitchez!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 13 August 2006 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

gorgeous melody, with that hint of sadness and longing that comes with knowing that now and forever is always a lie. if I knew more about music I'd say something smart about implied minor sevenths or something, but I just know it works.

for some reason, I often think of it as of a piece with "Long, Long Time"

Jody Beth Rosen,

I just wanted to let you know that I had just a fine time watching those monkeys run across my screen as I listened to Elvis Presley sing "Let It Be Me".

Is it just me, or does it kinda sound like "I'll Be There" just a little bit?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 13 August 2006 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

the "just call my name"/"now and forever" parts have the same melody.

over the past couple of years i've gotten really interested in the '60s and '70s "songbook" -- it provided a lot of common ground between artists and genres that (at least superficially) didn't have much in common. soul and country and gospel and dylan and chansons could all be on the same LP without anyone batting an eyelash.

this is one of my favorite versions -- i was hoping it would turn up on slsk because i didn't feel like going through a bunch of cd-rs to find it: bobby bare & skeeter davis.

ooh, that percy sledge version -- the piano ornamentation is so silly and over the top it almost doesn't fit, and yet it works perfectly.

francoise hardy (similar to nancy sinatra's)
dusty springfield & scott walker

kenny rogers & dottie west (inessential)

george harrison & jeff lynne (nice, very indie)
morten harket w/ the everly brothers (similar to above; harket is the guy from a-ha)

three years pass...

still think jody is my twin or something

this song is astoundingly beautiful

jim webb does a pretty version (w/ his sister) on his first solo LP

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

also ... REUP on that scott walker / dusty springfield duet plz

five years pass...

Doesn't belong on songs that sound like other songs but the "something happened on the day he died..." part of Blackstar reminds me of this.
