I started this over on nu-ilm but i'm still keen for any recommendations. Also anything similar?

This is what I had over at nu-ilm.

I've just finished Hotel California by Barney Hoskins and he seems to be a big fan. I've only heard a couple of things but they didn't strike me straightaway as anything special, so what am I missing?

Heroin and religion. Seriously, how was the book? I have it but still need to read it.
I have Dreams Come True which is VERY very nice. Although I'm not keen on mystical music, this was just so ethereal. Dreamy and still melancholic. I don't know, maybe you just need to be in the right mood?

heart food is godlike, the kiss and the donor are amazing songs. don't be afraid....

her music is like hot cider on a cold day -- totally innard-warming.

Heartfood is the classic, but I'm listening to Dreams Come True much more often...that last track on the bonus disc (the sad/uplifting piano one) is just awesome, a perfect end-of-set number for any DJ's playlist...

I promised to write in depth about JS on my blog before Xmas and still haven't gotten around to doing so. Hopefully I might be able to get something written before next Xmas *sigh*...

To answer stevien - the book is really good. BH has a real love/enthusiasm for his subject and it's a very interesting portrait of Gef$en which doesn't paint him all bad. I got it because I felt I was really missing something of the early 70s LA scene and I feel it's pretty much plugged that gap. I would imagine that if you were more au fait with the era there wouldn't be a whole lot of new info but i'm not sure.

Looking forward to that Marcello!

nine years pass...

Somehow she has escaped me until now, but I think if I could just discover one artist this good from now until I die I'd feel I'd lived a fulfilled life.

"That's The Spirit" comes on my shuffle all the time, I freaking love that song. Judee's performance is A+ of course, but her drummer is great, wonder who that was?

Her diction sounded so cool, I guess it's a California accent?

"He wages war with the devil a pistol by his side/and though he chases him out windows and won't give him a place to hide/he keeps his door open wide"

I think so, based on her speaking voice on the live version of "The Kiss": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0feFedDW_iQ

JUst saw the review of this in the latest uncut so thought it might be why the thread was revived

Milk Of The Tree: An Anthology Of Female Vocal Folk & Singer-Songwriters 1966-1973
contains Judee's Jesus Was a Crossmaker among other 60s folk etc stuff. It's one of the Grapefruit 3 cd compilations so is likely to be pretty well done, the other sets I have on the label are pretty good.

Nice to see her albums have just been reissued again too.

Huh, I guess I never posted on this thread, but she is definitely one of my best indirect discoveries via ILM. Don't remember which thread I first saw her name pop up on, maybe something on '70s singer-songwriters or Asylum records. My favorite is the s/t but "Heart Food" is great too.
