Deserves a thread of its own because it's such a great and underrated song. The chord changes are soooo great, particularly the chords in the bridge towards the end are so obviously the work of a musical genius.

Classic beyond any shadow of doubt!

Its a silly song. I don't like it.

Classic beyond any shadow of doubt, in the Ruth Badger sense!

That's more betterer.

It's not as good as "Save The Whale."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Good but I prefer 'Would It Not Be Good'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

and "Ah woant let the sunn goe down on mee"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

It is undoubtedly better than "Don Key-Ho-Tay!/Whaat do you say?/Are we tilting at windmills like youn?"

Or, indeed, "Bring On The Dancing Girls," which IIRC he had to perform on Razzamtazz accompanied by a troupe of, er, dancing girls.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

The only bit of that I really like is the first verse. The chorus and the sax are kinda let downs. (xpost)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I quite liked "bring on the dancing girls", as that's what I was doing at the time...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Dark horse

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

"Dancing Girls" just didn't work. However, the title track on "Human Racing" is a hidden gem that was released as a single, only without the same kind of success as the other singles from that album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

fifth single syndrome?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

How disappointed was I when I found out there was no answer to "The Riddle", it was just some old toss he tossed off off-hand.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

For years I went round telling people he wasn't letting on what the answer was, as it had only just been released in Australia.

toss tossed off off-hand?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Well, he's just an ordinary guy, oh me oh my.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently there is to be Nik Kershaw musical called The Riddle! I wa sjust talking to a producer friend fo mine who is aiming at the Trafalgar Studios in early Feb next year. (They are also going to use The One And Only in it as Kershaw wrote it!)

They're also talking about a movie of the song. Scouting for possible locations now. But it's difficult to find a tree by a river with exactly the right size hole in the ground. And as for 'old men of iron', well it's a casting nightmare that not even WETA can quite contend with just yet.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 17 August 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

It's an old man or Arran. So they can go up there and get one.

Near a tree by a river there's a hole in the ground.

Nights in the scullery (Jaap Schip), Friday, 18 August 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

I heard about the old man of Arran. Apparently he no big deal he just a wide boy-un.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 18 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

His mind is a beacon in the veil of the night though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 August 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

It's not as good as "Don't Kill the Whale".

Son of Spam (noodle vague), Friday, 18 August 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

This is the best thread that Geir has ever created and the rightest opinion he's ever had.
