1 - Jason Molina - Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go (LP+CD)
Just as I was starting this thread, I got that email! Woohoo! Since nobody else here has mentioned it (as far as I can see) it's time to get the hype going for my favorite soulful indie singer-songwriter Americana group out there.
This coming Tuesday, Jason Molina, the Songs: Ohia guy, has a new album coming out. Like his older one, "Pyramid Electric Co." this one is vinyl only but comes with a CD version. Why? Who knows. Also like PEC., this is solo Molina, and it seems like it's going to be more quiet, melancholic solo pieces. That certainly describes the free track available, Get Out Get Out Get Out
From SecretlyCanadian.com: I wanted badly to revisit the type of songs I did on my more experimental albums The Pyramid, The Ghost, and Protection Spells. I put this project together in the last days before I began what was a long and harrowing move back to Chicago. I wrote these songs as well as the half dozen or so that did not make it over the course of 3 mornings in Bloomington, Indiana and recorded them one after the other in the order they were written. [...] There are many moments of lyrical improvisation, where I was more or less trying to keep as much of my mind focused on things I'd never put into words before and didn't know if I ever would get those moments again. So in a way, these are meditations on depression, waiting, dislocation, separation, doubt, fear, loneliness...the usual from me...but here, if I did not see redemption or even a glimmer of hope...
Yes!
Even better, MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. is releasing a new album too on the 12th of next month! The sample track online is Lonesome Valley and it is just fucking fantastic! It sounds like MEC has finally achieved their essence that they were striving for on the last LP but fell slightly short. I can't wait for this!
So who wants to join me in anticipation?

And what's with the cover art? Is this seriously the cover art for the new MEC album? An irridescent underwear clad girl posing erotically in the woods or something? That's not how I pictured their sound, but whatever. LONESOME VALLEY!

I've been thinking about the album for the past week, and I think Mitchum captures it perfectly.

Jason, if you're reading this, please play early so I don't have to miss too much because of house arrest.

One of his best songs

He makes me think of Chris de Burgh -- which is not pleasant.
I really loved some Songs:Ohia and the first Magnolia Electric Co. album (the one with "Hold On Magnolia" as closer), but then I picked up a live album of theirs sorta by mistake and went right off them -- it was so turgid, plodding.
Perhaps I should give some of his more recent stuff a listen.

He canceled the Molina/Johnson tour last year and hasn't put anything out or shown up in public for over a year I think. Quite worried about him.

Mmm, that is a bit worrying. Haven't seen much mention of it on ILM, but I really liked the Molina and Johnson record.
Xpost Duke, you might like the Magnolia Electric Co. album Fading Trails or the Nashville Moon disc off of their Sojourner box set. All pretty great stuff. Funny that you mention Chris De Burgh. Doesn't really remind me of Molina, but I'm afraid to say 'Lady in Red' is a guilty listening pleasure of mine. Now i'm stuck imagining Molina covering it....might work okay actually.

'the black ram' from the soujourner box is stunning and it's kind of a shame that it's buried in a box that looks like a collector's/fan's thing when it's one of his best albums imo.

This dude is terrible. Worst Neil Young impression I've ever heard, coming on the heels of the worst Will Oldham impression I've ever heard.

Why bother even posting that on a thread clearly titled 'Who else is excited about new JASON MOLINA (ex-Songs: Ohia) and MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.?!' Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but why not write something positive about an artist you actually like, rather than saying Molina is terrible and not backing up that opinion with anything substantial. "Worst Neil Young impression I've ever heard?" is a pretty lazy comparison to make. Maybe you're just trolling. If so....at least make it entertaining dude :P
