Tears for Fears - "Sowing the Seeds of Love" (Beatles, says the common sentiment, though I personally feel it's more likely the Turtles would have recorded something like this than the Beatles)

Bingo!

Or Nirvana (the UK 60s band, that is)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 17 August 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Klaatu: Sub Rosa Subway (They may have been accused of being Beatles-copycats, but really, this is the only Klaatu song that sounds much like The Beatles at all)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 17 August 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

The only other song I heared was "Anus from Uranus" the b-side, which doesn't much, no.

I did see a copy of "Calling occupants" the other day, but resisted.

Dr Benway (dr benway), Friday, 18 August 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Weird Al Yankovic - Dare To Be Stupid (DEVO)...I recall Mark Mothersbaugh saying somewhere that this song sounded more like Devo than any actual Devo song or something like that.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Friday, 18 August 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Jet "Look What You've Done" (Ween)

that does sort of sound like ween, doesn't it? but i always thought "look what you've done" was the closest anyone's ever come to aping the beatles.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 18 August 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

(Geir of all people how could you forget Queen "Sheer Heart Attack" [Damned])

Just one little problem here: "Sheer Heart Attack" was released two years before Damned debuted.

Weird Al Yankovic - Dare To Be Stupid (DEVO)...I recall Mark Mothersbaugh saying somewhere that this song sounded more like Devo than any actual Devo song or something like that.

As I mentioned already in the initial thread, Yankovic is brilliant at this. "Dare To Be Stupid" is probably his best ever pastiche, but he has done other brilliant ones too. "Dog Eat Dog" sounds soooo obviously like Talking Heads, for instance.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 August 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Blur: T.O.P. Man (Fun Boy Three)
Why? OK, there's a certain Terry Hallism on the track, but why FB3?

zeus (zeus), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Bis: Mr Important (Blur)
Sparks: Upstairs (Devo)
Maximo Park: Acrobat (Pulp)
Blur: Trouble In The Message Center (Gary Numan)

zeus (zeus), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

The song "Saturday Morning" from the new-ish Minders album sounds just about exactly like early acoustic Sebadoh.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Feelies sound exactly like Tom Petty on "Sooner or Later."

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 20 August 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Hollies - "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" (CCR)

Matt Golden (goldmatt), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

Why? OK, there's a certain Terry Hallism on the track, but why FB3?

The backing vocals. The drum sound. Damon Albarn himself has admitted in interviews that the song was a homage to Fun Boy Three.

The Terry Hall thing is even more obvious on "Fade Away", which is The Specials anno "More Specials".
