What sor of bass should i buy?

I'm thinking about buying myself a bass, purely for my own amusement, i've got no intention of playing in public.

I played for a little bit when I was at school and was ok but i've probably forgotten everything that i learned back then (more than a decade ago). I'll probably go for a Squier but dunno whether to go for a PB, a jazz bass or a broncho. I'm a big strapping lass so the size isn't really an issue.

jazz bass! at least i always favored it over the P. the bronco's shortscale, right?

Yeah, with a single pick up. I'm 5ft 8 so i don't think i'm in need of a shortscale bass.

Don't forget to buy a guitar amp to go with it and then post to I Make Music asking how best to make them work together!

What i'd really like is a Jaguar Bass but i don't think i can justify it at this stage.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 18 August 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

ricks are cool, but they can sort of give you a big burn on the inside of yr right wrist, and are hella expensive if you're not sure you're going to be that committed.

getting a nice jaguar bass seems like a good idea to me. if you continue playing, you'll have a nice bass. if you get bored of it, you can sell it and get decent money for it. nice instruments are usually a bit easier/more fun to play too

Why don't they make affordable tube bass amps anymore? Is there no reason (tone-wise) to go with one over SS?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 18 August 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno. i think the tube market is more pro dudes now, that are going to spend big $$....i'd love a vintage ampeg tube more than anything, but i just can't afford one....the ampeg SVT 350H (solid state classic series) is pretty good...thank god i could borrow a 70s one for recording though, the difference was huge.

Guitarslingers prize t00b amps precisely for what most bass players wouldn't: their overdriven/distorted tones.

Not a bass player m'self, but my impression is that the dudes holding down the bottom end need exponentially more clean headroom, which solid-state lends itself to both in terms of tone (on the guitar side, no one's ever complained about e.g Jazz Chorus cleans) and portability (high-powered t00b heads are HEAVY AS FUCK).

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

These days there are a lot of decent basses at a lower price point. I'd suggest something used (no point paying full price...) and something simple -- fewer knobs/switches the better. Less stuff to go wrong... If you can get a brand name, great but play them first. If they feel okay, good. if it doesn't feel right, go with your gut and pass. I've had superb Fenders (P & J), Ricks and others -- and a few were pooches... If you're based in the UK or elsewhere over the pond you'll pay more of a premium that you would in the US. Stuff here is abundant and pretty cheap.. If you have a rich relative stateside, hit 'em up.

Bottom line is (sorry 'bout the pun) you can always sell the damn thing if you don't like it.

Forget bass. Buy a tuba.

overdriven bass is one of life's true pleasures!

Not disagreeing there really, but there's overdriven and there's "through a 22W guitar amp"...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the high bidder on this on ebay http://i9.ebayimg.com/05/i/08/03/cc/f5_1.JPG
