This is true, the entire album is phenomenal. It's an interesting counterpoint to their studio material.

Atrocity Exhibition on Les Bains blows the recorded version away.

y'all have the "preston 1980" live album too, yeh?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 August 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

yep, got preston 1980. need to give it a few more spins, as i initially hunted it down with a completist's mindset and i haven't yet given it its due

listening now, les bains has a very harrowing rendition of 'lost souls'. grand

it (preston) is like a glimpse into hell. the bit about the bus for bolton/bury wherever ... hooky's "it's all going wrong" ... THAT BIT WHEN THE BASS BREAKS and it sounds like aural bosch ... wow.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

hahah. hooky's "it's all going wrong". when?

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

you need to hear the whole thing. it's a total clusterfuck, basically. all the equipment packs in; IC sounds like he's teetering on the brink (probably because he was); i'm not sure what's happening for large parts of it, but they basically do a version of "the eternal" with no bass that sounds ... well, it defies language, really. just jaw-dropping. i think - perhaps some factory historian can enlighten me - that hooky is spending much of this time trying to effect some sort of repairs. but at one point during the inter-song melee there's this truly anguished "it's all going wrong".

haha (probably because he was)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yes to all the above.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 August 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

:)

"welcome to the atrocity exhibition"

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

... well, it defies language, really. just jaw-dropping.

I think I might have to buy this now.

LC (Damian), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

God yes, Grimly completely OTM about that version of The Eternal

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

the version of atmosphere on this is so awesome

the intro to atrocity exhibition is almost like cheap trick or something

'twenty four hours' is absolutely devastating on this; I'd say it's the centrepiece of the set, but there are too many other highlights.

Millsner, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 08:45 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

i particularly like how day of the lords (and shadowplay FWIW) is reproduced on this, because it just seems to up the intensity a thousand-fold and bring out the true essence of the song. with 24 hours, yes we do have an interesting take on it here, but i've always found the sedentary, tightly harnessed studio rendition to be the definitive version.
