not just things like the GI (germs incognito); full purchasable commodity:

the associates did it as 39 lyon street, and a couple of other names even I think.

and the human league did it as the men.

Though the last two weren't really secrets.

Didn't the Alarm put out a single under another name to prove they could get radio play as long as the programmers didn't know it was the Alarm?

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Saturday, 19 August 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

Steelyard "Sugartooth" McDan (and the Fab-Originees)? No records released under this name, though.

you want pastrami? (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 19 August 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

Now here's the important question - did any of these records released by reputable bands without their name attached succeed? Because I'd imagine that's why a popular band would release a record anonymously, in order to demonstrate that their talent and not their image or reputation is what sells the record.

ss sleepingbag (sleepingbag), Saturday, 19 August 2006 06:09 (nineteen years ago)

or they were contracted to a label and weren't allowed to record anywhere else under their own name.

or they were just taking the piss.

you want pastrami? (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 19 August 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

Ovuca = Astrobotnia

I remember at the time the Astrobotnia LPs came out no one seemed to know who Astrobotnia was, and it was even suggested that it's the Aphex Twin.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 19 August 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

i know the human league release had to do with a contractual issue. they were required by virgin to do a release with conventional instruments rather than their usual tape loops, and so they chose to do it under a different name. i do not think the song had great success and probably would have done much better if it had been released under the bands name since "being boiled" was doing so well.

the associates used assumed names just for the fun of it, i think. the different named groups also having a guest singer. i think their differently-named releases did pretty well.

isn't that exactly what (and why) the alarm did in 2004, releasing a single and video in the UK under the name the poppy fields? it was at least a bit of a hit, or so i have read.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 19 August 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

guided by voices/robert pollard = way way way too many pseudonyms to list.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 19 August 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Men single is one of my all time faves and is fantastic. BEF would then produce dance troupe Hot Gossip's album and feature I Don't Depend on You, as well as a bunch of Human League/Heaven 17 faves. I'm desperately looking for it.
