Yellow Magic Orchestra were like the Japanese Beatles, from what I understand. They were the quitessential Japanese pop band.

Shiina Ringo seconded, thirded, and fourthded.

Yuki is good, simple quirky pop. The video for her song "JOY" is awesome, it's a good "What the hell planet are the Japanese from?" moment.

Adam J. (In Place of Something Clever), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Supercar is not quite my thing, but not bad. Also the Zazen boys, mentioned by milton parker recently, are worth checking out. I don't like their (regular) vocalist though.

I remain curious about Altered States, but can hardly recommend what I haven't heard (or can I?--I'm sure I've done it before).

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh OH there's this guy named Kazuki Tomokawa, he's a really intense folk singer who's in a recent Takeshi Miike film, 'Izo'. I like him; his guitars are all mangled around the pick guard because he strums so furiously.

Adam J. (In Place of Something Clever), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

some albums i like
eddie marcon "shining on graveposts" - gentle acoustic folk, some sort of boredoms connection?
halcali "bacon" - goofy jpop/rap hybrid.
tujiko noriko & aoki takamasa "28"
takako minekawa "cloudy cloud calculator" - really goofy electronic jpop weirdness.

zappi (joni), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Haco! "ash in the rainbow" is beautiful. Her vocals are really comforting on this album.

I had pretty much gotten over my j-pop/shibuya-kei obsession at the tail end of the 90's, but Capsule is a newer act in this style that I've recently gotten into.

bangelo (bangelo), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Re: Nobukazu, I have the Scope record, which I do like a lot, but I started out with Funfair by Child's View (I think that's just him solo as well), and that latter totally charmed me. Basically, if you take the name of the record and his pseudonym and then filter them through distorted electronics, that is what it sounds like.

Also, I really love 'Kuru Kuru Miracle' by Tomoe Shinohara, but that might just be me.

Cities On Flame With Rock and Roll blog has had a lot of excellent heavy blues/psych/avant garde stuff from Japan that I'm enjoying:
