Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit - Is it really that impressive??

E-Clex (E-Clex), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently it is being hammered in Ibiza at the minute, but IMO it is slow and repetitive...

Thoughts?

E-Clex (E-Clex), Saturday, 19 August 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

slow and repetitive?

LOL

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

this?

Fedde le grande's massive ibiza anthem is back again!! This time we are treated to a plethora of remixes from some of this years most popular artists. First up claude von stroke of dirtybird fame drops a chunky us workout, swiflty followed by dj delicious & til west who drop an inspired "same man", style treat. Finally the current king of electro house dirty south joins forces with electro outfit tv rock for a rip your speakers in half mix. Big stuff all in all!! C2 for label of the year? we think so!!

it's not slow for a house record!

rollin', rollin', rollin', keep them dogies rollin', rawhide! thread (fandango), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I like the call-and-response between the fuzzy bassline and the higher-pitched, one-note synth. There's a playfulness about it that just works, kinda like Green Velvet when he's not trying to scare the shit out of you.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't call it "impressive" on some high aesthetic level, but it sounds like a record that would WORK on the dancefloor, hell yes.

rollin', rollin', rollin', keep them dogies rollin', rawhide! thread (fandango), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

The title would make more sense with a comma in place of the "4".

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Saturday, 19 August 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Someone asked me for this today, I didn't know what they were talking about. I just listened on Juno, perhaps totally shit is too harsh but it just sounds like HAIRDRESSER HOUSE. and not in a good way.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 August 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

WTF is HAIRDRESSER HOUSE?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 19 August 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

sounds like fairly typical (average perhaps) electrohouse to me, but there's not much to hate there for me.

Unless I was a deetroit purist maybe... "put your hands up for this place I'm gonna mention that has nothing to do with the sound I'm playing, yeah!"

"friseusen-elektro" - Haircut house - S/D

rollin', rollin', rollin', keep them dogies rollin', rawhide! thread (fandango), Saturday, 19 August 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

yes, this song is really impressive.

if you want a measure of its impressiveness, consider that it is one of the standout tracks on seamus hajj's new ministry of sound mix, which is itself one of the standout mixes of 2006, probably in contention for best mix of the year (it's better than body language 2).

haircut house movement 2006.

This is not the first to scar Detroit's legacy of greatness. It is just okay, occasionaly better than some of its peers, but not very much more to me.

x-post now THAT'S a step too far!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 August 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

"a lovely city"!

bad hair day house (fandango), Saturday, 19 August 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

HAIRDRESSER HOUSE - ha ha!

it must be big in edinburgh as i got asked for it three times there last night. it's a dud.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 19 August 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I got asked for Faithless on Thursday, tho they did play live in Dublin earlier that night.

Also a girl came up when I was playing and said "is this............techno.....and...........electrohouse????"

I said "yes I guess so"

"it's great!"

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 August 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

It just seems funny to me how one seemingly plain song stands out as a favourite when there are so many other songs of the same genre that have a lot more going on in them and are so much better

Mason - Exceeder
Umek - Love Peace and Hippies

To name but two.

E-Clex (E-Clex), Sunday, 20 August 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

No offence but those two tracks are like 100% bog-standard techno (the umek is almost trance!) and tech-house.

This ibiza tune, while no classic at least has a) catchiness 2) amusing/rousing vocal hook.

bad hair day house (fandango), Sunday, 20 August 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

"exceeder" is more catchy than this crap by far. I don't even like "exceeder" but it is!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Vahid are you street teaming for the Sessions series these days?

I have to say that all the tracks I've heard that are on the comp are kinda average. Don't really like Sanchez's "Lost", although the D Ramirez mix is probably best admittedly.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

is Fedde le Grand some hotshot DJ now or what? i remember seeing that guy when i was a teenager, trying to look cool inda club

rizzx (Rizz), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

It was nice to be reminded of 'The Freaks Come Out'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

It is everywhere in Ibiza, even the West End bars are caning this electro/funky house crossover stuff (David Guetta, Kurd Maverick, Sander Kleinenberg, Exceeder, Till West, Outwork, Lost...), presumably because it brings girls onto the dancefloor in stampeding hordes. I liked PYHUFD at first but by the 30th hearing in a week I was getting slightly bored.

It's interesting that the first place I saw the term "electrohouse" was ILM, but there is a distinct difference from ILM-loved Get Physical-esque stuff (e.g the 2004/2005 bobbins threads) and the more commercial sound of this summer which the term appears to refer to now. What started the transition? Body Language?

ewmy (ewmy), Monday, 21 August 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

since when were Ibiza bangers impressive anyway?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 21 August 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

well, the first time I began hearing electrohouse was in perhaps, Spring 2004, but more to refer to Tiefschwarz/2manydjs/Mylo/Rex The Dog, that kind of thing.

Then it began to be used to refer to GPM and stuff, and now it's a little confusing. I still hear things like Tiefschwarz's Fabric and think they are quintessentially electrohouse, ALL ONE WORD. However perhaps we could call the sound that's really big in Ibiza etc and everywhere else electro-house, noting the hyphen?

This is not in anyway practical but just trying to illustrate the two simultaneous meanings.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 August 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

I should clarify, I mean hearing the word "electrohouse", was in spring 2004.

Vahid are you street teaming for the Sessions series these days?

i wish, tim!

no really, though, i am the new public relations officer for the HAIRCUT HOUSE MOVEMENT 2006.

good tracks on the new seamus haji mix:

major boys - galaxy (this is cosmos "take me with you" pt 2)
sessomatto - got me movin on (joey negro mix) (this is transcendently fruity)
scape ft d'empress - be my friend (because dj t would be SO MUCH better w/ divas)
paul harris - find yourself a friend (legwarmer house w/ a tremendous bridge)
those guys - i walk alone (transcendently fruity pt 2)
ATFC - ooh ooh ooh (see i can listen to screaming divas all night long)
mish mash - speechless (so many divas all night long)

admittedly the second disc is pretty standard pop-electrohouse and i can't really say much for it other than none of the tracks are terribly obnoxious (see the remix of "last night a dj saved my life" on the 1st disc) and it is very, uh, functional music but i am really, really into the cosmos-meets-fred-falke-meets-blaze stylings of the 1st disc.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

also this "put your hands up 4 detroit" track is easy to dance to. rhythmically it's somewhere in that middle ground between "la la land" and "sexyback", which is pretty good territory to inhabit.

IT'S TOO MINIMAL

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

enough with the deadpan witticisms Steve

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm only half-joking.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Everytime I listen I jus cnt believe ppl think its so great! Maybe its jus a grower not a shower, cant imagine it is though

My interpretation of electro house did get a bit muddled after coming to ilx... I mainly go by the tunes that are in the electro section on djdownload. Alot of others use that name for slower (chilled) music

E-Clex (E-Clex), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

ILX in disliking overplayed club hits, oh my.

Anyway, if you want to point fingers: the Benassi brothers.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Is this REALLY a straight rip-off of the Matthew Dear track of same said name? Surprised nobody spotted that! (if true)

bad hair day house (fandango), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

four months pass...
It's not a rip-off, really...FLG does sample the one line from the Matthew Dear track, but the rest of it is fairly original, as far as I can tell. Listening to the original track (which kinda sucks, imo) did point out to me that the correct lyrics are "Put your hands up for Detroit, our lovely city". Which makes the idea of a bunch of European clubbers getting down to this even funnier. If only they knew...

musically (musically), Friday, 26 January 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

I thought it said "I love this city"?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 26 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

I want to hear a Fatman Scoop version of this. ACtually, no I don't.
