The Detroit Jit Scene...

Is anybody else following this on Youtube?

Imagine Detroit kids breaking to bass tracks in their mom's basement in front of a 200 dollar minidv camera. The beats and the dances are dope. The Chicago people are talking about Footwork but they don't have the breaking, the groundwork, or the locking that the jit scene has. Check it out:

I think that finally made the last month of ILM worth it. Awesome.

bad hair day house (fandango), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

These are totally great. What is the connection to the chicken noodle soup/toe wop/tone wop stuff happening in Harlem? Is there one? Youtube has tons of clips of that, and nobody on ILX seems interested (unless I've missed the threads, in which case sorry, but "Chicken Noodle Soup" by DJ Webstar featuring Young B is still my single of the year, I think). (Also, what is the Chicago stuff called? This is the first I've heard of that. I'm so out of it.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

haha there's a whole youtube scene for this for baltimore club too. (do a search for "club" or "baltimore" or check the baltimore thread on the noize board...i can't be bothered to dig up all the links i posted there already.) the best part is that there might be eastside/westside dance beef! i guess every regional dance scene in the country had the same idea at the same time?!

do the"turtle on your back.. arms and legs wiggling" and "push up position" dances actually work in a club?? I'm thinking these must be strictly mom's living room/basement permutations, because who in their right mind would touch a club floor with anything but their feet?? I guess if the groove takes you there you can't hold back.. but ew!

The Detroit drive time DJs are dropping Baltimore club tracks these days in with the usual D-town ghettotech. "Hey big girl!"

The Jit tracks sound to electro to be ghettotech. What are they?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

The first innovators of this new type of ‘jitting' were the 'Errol Flynns’, east side of Detroit’s most notorious gang, who gathered at full capacity with common-folk in basement parties and clubs, skylarking their signature hand signs called the ‘Errol Flynn’.

that sentence is like a whole new frontier of cool.

this girl and others host a show where dance troupes meet anywhere from the VFW to big clubs in manhattan and do this combination of breaking/popping/stepping/I don't know what else and it's pretty off the hook. The boys particularly dance to this homemade music that mixes new hip hop hits, dance classics and tons of samples from movies like Robocop and Terminator and Total Recall, and most of the dance moves seem to mimic Anime movies.

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 August 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

seriously these jit / hyphy videos aren't any more or less boring than videos of korean kids in WST / tribal / LRG throwing down to the incredible bongo band or jimmy castor - which is to say it's pretty boring.

there've basically been three major innovations in breakdancing in the last 20 years and those have been 1) crip walking 2) dave elsewhere and 3) over-serious suburban kids w/ time + money (see #2) and this stuff basically addresses #1 while losing the ambition of #2 and #3 and it has a slightly better soundtrack SO WHAT?

why'd vahid have to go ruin another thread? Haven't we discussed this already? You're supposed to start a NEW thread called The Detroit Jit Scene...(haters thread).

Anyway, I've seen groups on Flex-N-Brooklyn do shit above and beyond any of these clips, I just can't believe none of it is on youtube. There's like, 5 vids of kids doing solo Tut-ing in front of TVs which are always turned on, but none of the 5 man choreographed Robocop live-action Anime Breakdancing I used to watch every friday night on brooklyn public acccess.

Hell, they even gave me a shout out in one of their episodes after someone called my name in!

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 24 August 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hello everyone. I'd like to briefly clear up some info for everyone here. First, Detroit invented techno, there is no question here even for Chicago house people. Detroit techno/electro came first and started the whole electronic dance movement from kraftwek. Next as far the dance of Jit. This dance grew up with Techno and it is no wonder why these clips include fast pace electro, aux 88 beats and the like... this is the music done to this dance!

As far as this post goes:

"here've basically been three major innovations in break dancing in the last 20 years and those have been 1) crip walking 2) dave elsewhere and 3) over-serious suburban kids w/ time + money (see #2) and this stuff basically addresses #1 while losing the ambition of #2 and #3 and it has a slightly better soundtrack SO WHAT?"

Breakdance, david elsewhere and crip walking have nothing to do with each other. Nothing. This is basic, basic information that could be googled.

While Chicago may have this dance called footwork or juke, it really lacks history, style, and innovation in comparison to Detroit jit. I may be biased, but the jitters in Detroit can do some amazing things. Half of these clips are just people fooling around, when a true cypher comes out that is when these groups showcase their best.

Remember Popping, Locking, bboying(breakdance), Jit, etc are all completely DIFFERENT dances.

Peace
