DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

This track is very Godspeed you Black Emperor at times

the vocals at the start remind me a bit of Brendan Perry [Dead Can Dance]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Everything turns into goth in the end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Other sections in the track recall: Warrior Soul, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Dif Juz, Neurosis

Also at the start of the track i detect an early REM type sound.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I was just discussing Isis on the 'best first songs' thread, so this is a fine coincidence. If it builds upon the imposing brilliance of 'Panopticon' then I shall definitely be buying.

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

There's a riff right in the middle of that song which reminds me strongly of The Cure's Close To Me. Honest.

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

isis go 4AD! (with cure bits.) FUCKING TOP. bring it on.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

ahhh....more goodness from this band.....seeing them open aug22 for tool in gm place will be a little interesting. normally i stick to clubs.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait to hear this album. The last 2 are my fave albums of the last 5 years.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone here heard any Oceansize, by the way? They're the closest thing we Brits have to Isis IMO, and conversely THEIR last two albums are pretty much two of my favourites of recent years.

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

i wanna hear it too. this is and the new converge album. so very many pretenders to the throne have stepped up since both band's last albums, ya gotta wonder if they iz gonna stay ahead of the pack. not that they probably CARE if they are ahead of the pack...but i get bored and i no longer watch sports. for that matter, i wonder what the hell neurosis is gonna do after 5000 bands have taken their sweeping desert vista bootcamp psilocibin rok and tried to make it their very own.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

oceansize really need a better name before anyone is going to listen to them :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 August 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

they dropped the ball coverwise, unfortunately.

rizzx (Rizz), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: not all of us have the balls to name our band after a Jane's Addiction track.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

as for this new isis track ... wasn't convinced to begin with, but it grew into moments of some greatness. didn't blow me away, but i was in a funny mood this morning so i'll need to listen again.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

let the countdown begin.

october 30th? i was hoping it would be earlier

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

This song's ok, but "Holy Tears" is where it's at for me -- I prefer the evil Isis upchuck vocals whenever vocals are present.

ng-unit (ng-unit), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't love Panopticon, thought it was a step down after Oceanic and the remix disc thereof. But I'm very much looking forward to this one. I have the DVD, too, and it's great.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I thought panopticon was even better.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Everything turns into goth in the end.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 20th, 2006.

otm

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

On the whole, the disc is much better than Panopticon.

ng-unit (ng-unit), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Everything turns into goth in the end.

Print t-shirts, plz.

Isis are a great idea in theory (ambient shoegaze metal? I'll take some, please!) but I always find myself wondering "is this track still going?" about six minutes into every song. Even live. The remix disc is something else though, as Tim Hecker showed (twice) why he is, in fact, a god among men.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I keep meaning to go see them live again. I saw them in about 1999/2000 (can't remember the exact year, but they were touring with Botch who were supporting We Are The Romans), and they were fantastic, but very different than everything I've seen them do since - the midpoint of their set was a 5-10 minute theremin/didjeridoo drone-battle.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

i've seen them live three times, and they have absolutely fucking kicked it each time. best was a tut's, not long after oceanic came out. they ended up staying on my mate's floor: there were little signs all round the venue saying: "isis have nowhere to sleep tonight. can you help?"

I prefer the evil Isis upchuck vocals whenever vocals are present.

proof that i am becoming ever more metal as i get older: so, astonshingly, do i.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 August 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Sweet, Sweet Isis. they just keep surprising you, don't they? I very much appreciate their veer towards more traditional post-rockishness. I bet the record reserves more refreshing surprises. I very much can't wait.

Laterallateral (latterallateral), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't it be cool to see an Isis/Sunn O))) collaboration?
That would BUCHE! Maybe The Jesus can make it happen.

Frank S. Besnar (latterallateral), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Isis and Sunn? FUCK NO)))

ng-unit (ng-unit), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

vocals at the beginning remind me of the meat puppets

6335 (6335), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Barry, all you need is Oceaninc, really. Scratch that -- all you need is "Weight." (Ambient shoegaze metal trip hop.)

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

the vocals seem higher in the mix on this new track. i'm seeing them opening for Tool tomorrow.

pinder (pinder), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I like this new track... its still more of the same tho isn't it? (and what's so foul about an Isis/Sunn0))) collaboration...? Isis with heavier guitars, Sun0))) with more rhythmic impulse and melody... lots of shrieked and gutturally roared vocals... mmm)

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Monday, 21 August 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Isis should collaborate with Damon Albarn.

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

An editor friend of mine explains why he won't be bothering with Isis' new disc, despite their widespread hipster/art-critic cred: "Godflesh covering Slint. There, I said it. And all those twats get their magazines for free."

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 21 August 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

My copy of this CD arrived in today's mail, along with the new Suffocation. Meanwhile, I'm supposed to be reviewing the new Keith Jarrett solo piano 2CD set. Crap.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

From what I have read, Isis also have a live DVD coming out soon.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

They do. It's quite nice, as I mentioned upthread.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

Could have bought Oceanic just now, but it cost too much, so I ended up buying Jesu's Silver EP (purely on the basis of Broadrick's remix of Earth's 'Harvey') and Faith No More's Angel Dust instead (it being high time for a voyage into alt-metal). Have listened to Silver a coupla times now (and am loving it), and am steeling myself for FNM.

Did I make the right decision?

Scourage (Haberdager), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

they were selling cds and tshirts ridicilously cheap at their live shows. $10 and $12 each canadian.

pinder (pinder), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

scourage, there is no other record like angel dust. so yeah, i'd say you made the right choice (for now). :)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

angel dust! fucking hell, what a record. oh wow. did i ever buy it on CD to replace my crappy copied tape? i'm not sure i did. i should. indeed, i will.

and the "silver" EP is my record of the year thus far. blindingly, staggeringly, gloriously good.

so yeh, i think that was a good call.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Could have bought Oceanic just now, but it cost too much, so I ended up buying Jesu's Silver EP

A WINNER = YOU

Barry, all you need is Oceaninc, really. Scratch that -- all you need is "Weight." (Ambient shoegaze metal trip hop.)

I liked "Panopticon" better, but the remixes basically trump most of the band's original versions.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

"Godflesh covering Slint. There, I said it...."

OH HOW AWFUL MY EARS ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Is there no Jesu thread? We may have to start one; Silver is ace, especially the title-track. Note to Mogwai: THIS is (roughly) how Mr. Beast should have sounded. Cowards.

Scourage (Haberdager), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

there is a justin/godflesh/jesu/etc thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Godflesh, God, Techno Animal, etc (S&D/CoD)

Maybe Ned can add Jesu to the title?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

they were selling cds and tshirts ridicilously cheap at their live shows. $10 and $12 each canadian.

hey pinder....did you notice that at gm place they wanted $40 cdn for the isis shirts? i hate that these large venues take a huge slice of the pie!!!

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i saw that, crazy! you can buy the same shirt at hydraheadshop for $15.

they were great though. an echoy arena kinda enhanced the quieter parts. they played for 30mins, which means 4 songs. So Did We, Dulcinea, Backlit, and another new song.

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

the cover art for this may suck but I can still spot pushead art at ten paces... looking forward to hearing this.

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 24 August 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Dulcinea is a pretty good representation of the whole album, sound-wise. It's very varied, lots more vocals than on Panopticon (both singing and, er, growling), the light bits are lighter and the heavy bits are heavier than before, I'd say after 3/4 listen.

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 27 August 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 27 August 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Those are some juicy track-times...

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 27 August 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

so a number of folks have this up on 5l5k and the couple tracks i have heard have me counting down til oct 31st.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be buying it anyway, but I got the mp3s and its a pretty good album. Not as immediate as the last couple.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 28 August 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

bump

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Saturday, 2 September 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
this came out today, but still no more discussion on it?

picking it up this weekend as i have yet to see it up here in vancouver.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

I think the vinyl from Conspiracy ships either the 15th or 25th of November. I forget.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

I bought this yesterday, not knowing that I'd unwittingly made myself seem like a super-keen Isis fan by grabbing it the second it came out. Honest guv'nor, I was scanning the 'Metal' section and just happened to notice it.....

Well, I'm listening to this at the moment, and although it's strongly reminiscent of Panopticon, I'd say it's still pretty fine listening in its own right, and several re-spins will surely reveal undiscovered intricacies.

And 'Firdous E Bareen' is FUCKING cool (this is having heard half the song, which I am currently in the middle of).

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

(half an hour later)

OMG THIS IS AWESOME, THEIR BEST YET

:-D

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

I really want to like this, but compared to Panopticon & the new Agalloch, it's just not doing it for me.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

i am very much looking forward to this - and the new converge as well, oy. i think it'll be next week before i get it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Louis did you pick up the Red Sparowes album too?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

if not, you should.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Red Sparrows live was ok but nothing to write home about. Better on record, or what?

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

well: it's a very, very good album but not awesome. but yes, i think the music's far more suited to introspective headphone listening than to ROCKING OUT IN THE MOSHPIT lml lml etc.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

i just figured it sounded like isis and that it would keep. same with converge, actually. and i love converge, but i didn't feel any great hurry to buy the new one. i will get it eventually and i will like it and that will be that. i've been making do converge-wise with that latest hope conspiracy album which i play over and over and over in the truck like an idiot.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

im gonna buy this next week when i feel less poor (payday)

i did buy the isis dvd recently which i was super-excited about because i was actually at the show that is featured in its entirety (sydney). strange sounding dvd, didn't realise at the time that they made so many errors onstage.

i did crank oceanic earlier on my ipod. an absolute cracker of a cd. the epitome of heavy for me. depth, emotion, integrity. all that

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

Best track so far: 'Over Root And Thorn', which honestly feels half the length of its 8:30 runtime. An amazing build-up which doesn't actually go overboard on the release, keeping the listener primed and alert for the next track (the album as a whole does this very well).

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

HMMM. i got it, and i am underwhelmed. this is not good. it seemed to just wash over me.

that said, it's been a shit day and i didn't pay it very much attention; just sat and hoped it would grab me. i'm very much looking forward to listening again, because i think i've basically missed most of what's going on ... however, thus far only "holy tears" (the most obviously old-skool track on there) has left any big impression.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

It's definitely an album that needs a lot of listens to "get". Wasn't as instant as Panopticon and I felt a bit underwhelmed on 1st listen. But then eventually it started sinking in.
I bet you love it this time next month Simon (if you don't just put it away and forget about it)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

'holy tears' is IMO the dullest, most linear track on the album! Oh, what joys await thee... :-)

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Saturday, 4 November 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

BTW my new speakers (coupled with the fact that this is like my 14th listen) have totally allowed me to "get it." I really really like it now, probably better than the Agalloch.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 4 November 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hurrah. Now we're just waiting on Simon!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 4 November 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I bet you love it this time next month Simon (if you don't just put it away and forget about it)

quicker than that! second listen: it revealed itself in myriad twisting ways to be quite, quite wonderful. very different from what they've done before, i think - this is music to concentrate on intently - but absolutely incredible, and potentially better than all that went before ... am looking forward to spending a lot of time with this album. i feel repeated listening will unveil new revelations.

you were right, dudes. and i'd actually forgotten all about this thread: i came here to say "hey, i was wrong" and didn't realise you'd pre-empt me :)

oddly, my mate phil - who got me into isis in the first instance, and has on occasion been totally obsessive about them - still isn't getting it at all. hmm.

i have the new converge on my desk in the other room too. will listen tomorrow. ROCK.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 17 November 2006 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

Thats a great album too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 17 November 2006 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

i've also got the mogwai zidane soundtrack to listen to ... am annoyed, because i really wanted to see the film first, but for some reason i never got round to it. still, the album's meant to be superb (better than "mr beast", i've been told; mind, that was a huge grower too) so i guess i shouldn't be too upset.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 17 November 2006 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Do you like Old Man Gloom, Simon?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 18 November 2006 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

what i've heard of them, yes: my pal phil has put a couple of tracks on mix CDs for me (namely "valhalla", "the volcano" and "better to receive"). i need to hear more.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 18 November 2006 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, you do!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 18 November 2006 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...
i'm seeing these lads later tonite.

i'm digging the latest record, so it should be a good show.

the drummer is all over this album

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Saturday, 3 February 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

excellent show it was

highlights: in fiction, holy tears, wills dissolve

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

ten months pass...

good god, that show was over 10 months ago. how time flies.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

in retrospect, this is one of those albums you play kinda regularly when it's released to familiarise yourself with likely fodder for the band's live show. but then you don't think about it much after seeing the show...

i don't listen to it much these days. doesn't really feature the primal energy of oceanic or the creativity and depth of panopticon

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 07:15 (seventeen years ago)

i've not listened to it -- or any isis -- in a while. hmm.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

i still listen to oceanic a fair bit. particularly the first two tracks. and those two tracks are sort of atypical of the direction the band pursued on future records and actually throughout the course of that record itself.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 08:26 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, this is the record that made me lose interest. well, this and one of the most dull live shows I've ever seen. this band really did live up to the "boring" tag in the end, huh?

anyway, this record just sounds a little too much like tool!

don't wanna be too harsh, tho. still really like panopticon and mosquito control but never really pull out anything else. mosquito control is pretty awesome, really.

original bgm, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

i still like celestial better than anything else they've done

latebloomer, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Panopticon still their best, to me. I like how any of the 4 big albums are different people's favorites. Kinda cool, no consensus.

stephen, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

i wonder how many people would dig the latest one the most if it wasn't their introduction to the band though...

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)
