Myspace for those who've not heard them before, like me before today. Not bad in a Roy Orbison/Chris Isaak/Gun Club/Nick Cave/Calexico/16 Horsepower line-of-descent way, I gotta say! (And Tindersticks as well, come to think of it.)

they're great. saw them with HUMANWINE not long ago.

Emily B (Emily B), Sunday, 20 August 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

better than not bad. they're fantastic. they're not nearly as stiff as the tindersticks. maybe the success of beirut will drag them along since they we're doing that sort of thing with more passion long before he was although maybe doing the soundtrack for little miss sunshine offers more possibilities.

"How it Ends" is an incredible song, even if it's now going to be on every single MP3 blog EVER after being the 'theme' to "Little Miss Sunshine."

Ned! How can this be?

Sadly, you just missed their Troubadour appearance (as in, by two days). Which I can't report on, since I'd already shot my Troub was for the week on Tiki Theater's other crush, Silversun Pickups...

i've heard they are amazing live from people that have seen them.

Ha, you mean Saturday night? Hilarious, maybe I should have stayed up in LA. Another time -- I wasn't even aware of the Little Miss Sunshine connection, Chuck E. was trying to remember the band name Davana but typed 'Davotchka.' I went investigating and there we are.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

They are a very good live band. We had the honor of opening up for them twice, once in Madison and again in Chicago. Nice folks, too.

Friday, so no worries there. I'm sure they'll be back, though after selling out the Troub and getting placed in a Major Motion Picture, it may be on to the El Rey for them...

hooray for pretty good bands from Colorado! there are too few

lemin (lemin), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

they did the 'theme' to everything is illuminated too. that same song as well.

Emily B (Emily B), Monday, 21 August 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them open for Black Heart Procession around 6 months ago. They were called back for two encores... I don't think I've ever seen an opening band do that.

MadMaryWilliams (MadMaryWilliams), Monday, 21 August 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

i only know the 'how it ends' songs from the EII film. but it's pretty great.

eight months pass...
A friend spun something by these guys at a get-together this week.

I kept getting completely distracted because the singer sounded so very much like Paul Buchanan. My periodic exclamations must have been rather annoying for everyone else there, none of whom knew/gave a shit about The Blue Nile.

Anyone else hear the similarity, or does my friend's living room just have a mysterious Buchanan-simulating acoustic?

how it ends is being used in a gerber commercial.

Sorry - not sure where the 're' came from there

Kaliova, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

i think it is fabulous. doesn't seem to be the universal opinion of it though. the last song especially, like some long lost this mortal coil track, not sure where it came from but it is gorgeous. it won't make them stars, sadly, too many of the odd hysterical tracks still which makes me happy. they could have done an 'all things considered' record but didn't.

This new live orchestral album with the Colorado Symphony's pretty great. Definitely a band that suits such a combination more than most!
