HEY THERE FUCKFACE!

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Monday, 21 August 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

ARE YOU TALKIN' TO ME or is that from a song?

Personal faves:

Fear of Flying OR Alcoholiday OR Some People Try to Fuck With You - Teenage Fanclub. Just the casual way they sing it, like it's not big deal, just a word like any other word.

Dilate [Righteous Babe, 1996]
On an album loaded with quotable quotes, my favorite is the refrain (well, she says it twice) of the six-and-a-half-minute "Adam and Eve": "i am truly sorry about all this." I mean, she knows--knows what a pain in the ass she is, knows how much space her emotions take up, knows she once banged a power line with her stickball bat and blacked out the entire eastern seaboard. She boasts about her integrity, her vulnerability, her joy. She jokes about them too. She has a friend's mom phone in obscure verses of "Amazing Grace." She utters, I kid you not, the most vituperative "fuck you" in the history of the music. She is herself, and for once that's more than enough. A-

I don't think there's anything quite as invigorating as "KICK OUT THE JAMS, MOTHERFUCKER!".

I've wanted to make a "most disarmingly tender instances of profanity" thread for a while now

"Ashes of American Flags" has a pretty sonorous "fuck" in it

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I always liked how Robert Smith says it in "The Kiss": "Get it out! Get it out! Get it out! Get your FUCKING voice out of my HEEEEAAAAD!"

Hey, if you're going to mention Teenage Fanclub what about the charming line in Verisimilitude: "I always feel the need to profane, I always said fuck when I thought I should".

That Wu Tang song where Method Man goes, "I couldn't give a cotton pickin' fuck" (Mysteries of Da Chess Boxing perhaps? Apologies, its been a while)

Fuck Tha Police!

Malkmus's cooly devastating "I could really give a fuck" re Smashing Pumpkins in Range Life.

And Rage of course, especially for the legendary moment where Bruno Brooks unwittingly played the uncut version on daytime Radio 1. Or is that just an urban myth?

Certainly the finest example of invoking the word "fuck" while not actually saying it is Elvis Costello's "Love Went Mad": "I wish you luck with a capital f."

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Well, all of my three initial choices (Sex Pistols, The Fall, Pretenders) have already been mentioned, so...fuck it.

I'm partial to Jon Brion's "Walking Through Walls":

He sings "Get out of my face" in a very pretty happy pop melody and then the backup vocals (also his) sing "Motherfucker!" in an equally happy harmony. Wonderful!

Harry Nilsson's happy poppy "You're breaking my heart / you're tearing it apart / so fuck you" was a fun surprise back in 1972.

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Thursday, 24 August 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed on "The Classical." For a while I played that song every day after I left my shitty corporate job. It did make my ride home enjoyable.

The Beta Band - The Cow's Wrong

At the incredible climax of this brilliant song, the apparently distinct vocal lines 'Running up and down' and 'I fucked it up' are layered over one another in such a manner that it honestly sounds like Mason's singing 'I fucked another man'. This is also the greatest misheard lyric I've ever come across.

Nice one. Certainly one of Will Oldham's most curious (lyrically anyway) songs.
