This really needed to be turned into a *tender acoustic ballad* for Generation Y-ers? I guess if you want to be the Cowboy Junkies of your generation.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, not working. Pitchfork in general doesn't seem to be loading.

I blame 'maps'.

you blame the one undeniably great moment in their career? their one gift from god?

'our time' is so much better than 'maps'!

genital hyphys (haitch), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

fact checking cuz, that photo has brightened my morning...

i still love YYYs. but The Diamond Sea is one of my favourite songs ever, and any version that lasts less than ten minutes is no friend of mine.

actually, madder rose could do a fabulous version of this song.

"Maps" always seemed to me like the song you'd like by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs if you didn't actually like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs that much, or the style of music they usually play. But that's the song everybody always says they like! Hmm. If they're now doing tender acoustic versions of Sonic Youth songs I fear they are now actually LISTENING to those people.

I always thought they sounded like Sonic Youth a little but it had something to do with how Nick is able to get such extraordinary sounds out of his guitar, not err "song structure" or "songwriting" or whatever, at which I think the YYYs kind of have it all over Sonic Youth already.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

(I mean besides Nick's incredible guitar playing - which I agree does change it totally - "Maps" could be a... Pavement song?)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

Haha I just looked at the publicity photo that goes with the PFork article... Brian looks kind of bummed about his new "punk" getup/haircut look!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

"Maps" could be a... Pavement song?

Cat Power meets Archers Of Loaf was how I described it on first lesson.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

edde you are missing off the first part of that sentence. but yeah even without the first part of that sentence i'll say it. it feels right, at least right now.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

i know:)
selective quoting, i suppose.

edde (edde), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

why are the lyrics to diamond sea so much more annoying than those of your average sy tune? I think it's related to the phrase "diamond sea" itself

xave (xave), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

maps:yyy::outdoor miner:wire

but not in terms of quality of course.

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Eh, "Maps" is about as good as "Outdoor Miner."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

I finally heard it.. and it's allright. Not too much to cheer about.
