Tech Question - Ripping MP3s from DVD sources

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I wasn't sure how to search for it.
Is there any way to make an MP3 out of a chunk of sound from a DVD, using only my computer/some program? After years of having King Cotton's "Roscoe's Rap" from the out-of-print "Tapeheads" soundtrack (among countless others) on my S0u1se3k queue, it suddenly dawned on me that there might be some way to do a DVD-to-MP3 rip.
Anyone have any tips?

There are a few progs that do this. That's not terribly helpful on its own I know.

The simplest answer would probably be to record the sound as it plays using something like Total Recorder (instead of complexer solutions like ripping the whole DVD to your hard disk, demuxing the audio stream, converting to 44khz, etc)

Shareware, apparently. Not tried it, so cereal empty, or whatever.

i use mplayer's audiodump option (dumps to wav) then lame to mp3 (either can resample to 44.1 but i think i used sox to do it). this is all linux. (people really do need to specify the system they are using in requests like this)

(if you use total recorder remember to turn off your mail arrival alerts etc!)

The mplayer solution works on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and a host of other OSs.

Um, this is going to sound exceedingly technical since I don't have the friendly software tools at work, but you basically want to decrypt the dvd (if encrypted), use a demuxer program to split the audio and video tracks, then use some audio editing program that can read ac3 audio to capture the correct segment and flatten it to stereo, if necessary.

So yeah, just capturing it from your computer's audio device via mplayer is a lot easier.

Thanks, everyone - I'll give it a whirl (sorry for not mentioning my OS, it's Windows XP).

The one I have is a shareware (no track longer than 4 mins) version of Xilsoft. OK for CD singles with otherwise unobtainable tracks.

Audio Hijack. I think it might only work on Macs, though. So get a Mac.

I recently did a rip of the Banks Violette / Thorns Ltd. DVD. Sounds ace!

Here is a link to some DVD audio ripping tutorials:
