What does ILX think of this bit of Scandinavian Spare-Pop? Sounds like a more rural version of the Knife to me.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

good track. bad video (i hate the style of the drawings).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

"spare-pop"?

like Victoria Concrete's voice despite there being several things wrong with it (she'd be laughed off x-factor). like the bongos and the whistling.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

she'd be laughed off x-factor

this is hardly a con.

bongos and whistling have their uses now and then.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

In a very real way, we'd all be laughed off x-factor.

(Is there / Should we start) a thread of 'singers who'd be laughed off X-Factor' ?

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

I like this song btw.

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

> bongos and whistling have their uses now and then.

oh, i meant 'i like the bongos...' (i tend to drop the 'i' off starts of sentences)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

aha

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

the whistling gets to me *mutterhappymutterhardcoremeldoymutter*

want to punch the kids in the video too. smarmy faced cunts. Terribly drawn, they look old, they have perma creases/wrinkles. grmmph

I need a cup of tea.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

who are these people anyway? I heard about it through a friend who said he liked the lyrics. Yes the singing's very flat but it's rather charming and reminds me of Slum/Parsely Sound's "Twilight Mushrooms" on which the vocals teeter over the line of dreadful and wonderful.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

victoria is (ex?) Concretes (swedish band). dunno about the other three.

oh, all swedish. could've guessed:

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Thursday, 24 August 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Terribly drawn, they look old, they have perma creases/wrinkles. grmmph

they are faithful renditions of the illustrative style popular at the time this song supposedly harks back to. the sort of thing you see on dated airplane safety instructions and whatnot.

also if you want rural Knife listen to 'Parade' from their first album.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

oh i didn't realise it was the concretes - that makes sense! Hate to get all NME but it does feel like there's a mini revolution happening in Sweden in particular what with Zeigest, The Knife, and now this.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

didn't realise they'd done so many records either from the look of their site.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - I think it's just that their idea of good pop isn't Paris Hilton :p

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

I see it as pop for black metal fans some of the time.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I am ever going to be 'getting' metal, I wonder what I'm missing occasionally... then forget to care again :|

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

er.. by which I mean new fangled stuff, not like hard rock/sabbath & stuff whish is fine.

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

what do you mean by new "fandangled" stuff though? Metal's as diverse a genre as any other. The kind of Metal I like to listen to tends to have a certain wackiness to it like Sigh or Ulver, or it represents a certain amount of imagery that you just don't get in other music, like the majestic "riding up a mountain on a horse with a fucking club in your hands"-style done by Emperor. I'm not so hot on Metal that takes on a very modern or Western aesthtic. This isn't just Limp Bizkit I'm talking about here, but for me I'll take the Nordic imagery of Enslaved or even the Mesopotamian obsession adopted by Melechesh over the "KILL KILL GUNS AND SNAKES AND BAGGY SHORTS AND SHIT" of some US and UK bands being reported in Terrorizer etc. That said there are exceptions - Slayer and Strapping Young Lad particularly. But being a lover and not a fighter I prefer my Metal to be a more imaginative and cerebral listen rather than a mosh-fest. I have Venetian Snares and Hellfish to do that for me.

Rounding to the original point, I reckon an album like Silent Shout would definitely appeal to Metal fans with open minds. Half of it does sound like the intro to a Bal Sagoth album anyway.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

rounding to the original point yeah :) don't want to derail (there's a metal thread bumped right now anyway) there is a vast world of metal out there I know! It's kind of intimidating. Maybe I should wait another ten years...

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

off topic it may be but I understand the aesthetic they're playing up in the video, I get the style, but for some reason the actual facial expressions irritate me inexplicably. is that clinched face look absolutely central to what the video is aiming for? and if so why aim for that? bleugh. I'm cranky today. screw it though, bad video.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha, i had exactly the same reaction. but the animation is also poor, clumsy.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't seen the video - anyone got a link?

rounding to the original point yeah :) don't want to derail (there's a metal thread bumped right now anyway) there is a vast world of metal out there I know! It's kind of intimidating. Maybe I should wait another ten years...

Without wanting to derail any further, but I agree with you that it can be daunting and sometimes a little hard to delve into. I mean, with Dub there's loads of stuff out there and it can also be a bit daunting but you have staple acts like Lee Perry and King Tubby which can be generally trusted and you move from there. Metal is so dodgy and finding the illusive needle in the haystack can be incredibly time consuming - especially if you don't really know what you like.

I find the idea of sticking on a Metal album these days really trying but once I do it I can be very much rewarded. I don't know if I actually can be bothered to sit and listen to 50 minutes of caterwauling and screaming, especially if it's epic build-up kind of stuff or if it just sounds like it's going to be BORING.

Actively seeking good Metal can be fun though. You can either go the hit-and-miss and just pick the band with the best album cover (often a good barometer, the more demons and virgins and the more incomprehensible the band logo, the better I say); or you can go on some sites and read a few reviews. I found the idea of Melechesh quite interesting because they use Mesopotamian imagery and scales to enhance their music. Sadly the music is a little flat though. Bal Sagoth is good fun - futuristic battle music with great big keyboard noises and comedy song titles. Arcturus and the associated project Ulver are leaps ahead of the Metal game, fusing it with jazz and electronica to make a really epic and interesting noise. Sigh, a Japanese Thrash band also do a lot of dicking-around with genre exercises as well and it works surprisingly well. You've also got the more conservative, fun-hating, ultra-conformist Black Metal bands like Darkthrone who sound like someone dropping glass sheets in a church and then recording it on a dictaphone which does it for some people.

I say don't give up on Metal really. It's widely underappreciated for the same reasons it is loved and once you're in that mood then it can be awesome.

Recs:
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors (very advanced, epic metal that has certain leanings toward Goth-Pop and experimental electronics but still keeps it raw)
Emperor - Scattered Ashes (they are the kings of whirlwind black metal really - very atmospheric)
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape (Thrash Metal that goes on journeys of Country and Western, Manga ending music, Reggae-Ska and everything in between).

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

their new album is wonderful...and while Young Folks is the obvious choice for the single, most of the tracks are of the same quality...seek out "Amsterdam" and "Chills"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

bizarre this metal derailment.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

i thought the video was good. looked like the front cover of "feels" by animal collective.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - bizarre but helpful! thx dl

bad hair day house (fandango), Thursday, 24 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

amsterdam is on their myspace page along with young folks and the 2 b-sides.

there's more to the video than you're probably seeing (ie it's not as cheap as it looks) lots of multiplanar things going on there - when she moves her head only parts of her hair moves, for instance. but yes, the janet and john look of it is, er, an acquired taste.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha i absoutely loveeeeeeeeeeeeee pb&j!!! they are sooo kewlllll amsterdam doesnt reach the sublime like young folks but maybe cos victoria is just fab on it!!!! lol itd be so kewl if victoria joins pb&j but now she's solo i guess she can do loads of other kewl stuff!!!

ohhh btw discobelle.net have posted two remixes of young folks besides the "beyond the wizards sleeve" one ----> punks jump up special disco one kicks ass w/more bongos andddd sounding a lil like the rapture to me (i.e. the serge santiago edit of "gonna get myself into it) for some reason lol :P xx

Rudy Katoch (rudykatoch), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

next single is 'let's call it off'.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

This track annoyed the hell out of me the first time I heard it but I love it now. It's the big rave-friendly twee indie pop hit of the summer, isn't it? I predict I'll hear it at least three times at Cross Central this weekend.

The Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve mix rules, and apparently there's a TOMAS ANDERSSON remix - even thinking about that boggles my mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.zshare.net/audio/peter-bjorn-john-young-folks-tomas-andersson-remake-mp3-sy5.html from discobelle.net yay

Rudy Katoch (rudykatoch), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't heard the album, but i've listened briefly to samples and didn't find it very impressive. however, i really love the single. "young folks" is a true pop gem. and i fucking hate swedish groups, so to my ears it's that good. that bass sound is great. and the b-side, which i gather isn't on the album is surprisingly nice and mellow.

Dan Gr (certain), Thursday, 24 August 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

are they worth seeing live?

braveclub (braveclub), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

i do not like this song. i do not like whistling. aaargh. i want and do not want to hear the t andersson rmx in equal measure. aaargh.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

It's a great song.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Chills" from the album gives me, er, chills. Not feeling too clever tonight, but seek out that song.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 20 October 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
pretty great song.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

agreed that the song is great...how does the rest of the album fare?

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

There are better tracks on the album than this. "Writer's Block" is a pleasant pop album, with two or three classic tunes.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

agreed. some great songs and some forgettable ones. Reminds me a lot of R n B albums, with 3 amazing singles and then filler...

zippezappy (doomed), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

they would do much better with another singer
annoying voice

emekars (emekars), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Presumably no coincidence that 'Chills' sounds so much like The Chills 'Pink Frost'.

Good song anyhow.

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

every song is good on WB

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Wait I can't believe the person who started this thread said it sounds like a "rural version of the knife"

zippezappy (doomed), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

The Readers Wifes played "Young Folks" at Duckie last Saturday, yay. It's my second favourite single of the year.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 9 November 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

Young folks
Love to see red
Young folks
Never talk about it
Young folks
Crave a blue lady
Young folks
Know and still they doubt it

I'm just no good without it
I'm not a man at all
It makes my skin crawl
