Kinnie Starr: C/D, RFI

I heard a couple songs I kind of liked (particularly "Soar"). I'm probably more curious about why there's hardly any mention of her here than I am in Kinnie Starr herself, but I would still be interested in impressions. (She seems like she could be a Canadian MIA/Lady Sovereign/Lily Allen rolled into one, but how would I know?)

(Eh, I don't see any reason to think I would like this in a big way. I will wait to see what you all make of it or not.)

ha; in vancouver, where she's from, we've had hype for the last 10 years about how edgy, daring, bold, whatever... i've always been pretty uninterested in what she does, possibly as a result of the every-two-years "kinnie star is BACK! and she's still WEIRD!" features in local papers. then again, i haven't listened to a lot.

She's been the go-to gal for local-rags-gettin-hip-to-local-scene for ages hasn't she? Her and Bocephus King should make an album together. Think of all the exposure they'd get. In Vancouver.

She's not MIA/Lily Allen/Lady Sov/ anyway. Not many pop chops. More like the female Michael Frente (the dude from Spearhead) but with a distant echo of a former life as a soppy female singer-songwriter. Pretty much standard folk festival fodder, which is where I've seen her at least three times. Last time was at the Comox Valley festival - it doesn't get any more hippy than that place and she went down a storm.

"Soar" was the first thing I heard, which was a little misleading. (It did sound like a lighter take on a Lady Sov type thing, to me--that is, someone who doesn't really listen to much of that.) But the songs from the new album sound pretty poppy to me, seem somewhat catchy. I'm not too taken with the vocals.

Hmmm. I think I like "Bore Me."
