What is the perception of "HYPHY" outside the Bay Area?

Seeking objective opinions about the world's reaction (or lack thereof) to HYPHY music/culture. Folks around here are under the impression that they're at the epicenter of the next big thing. I will at least attest to the truth-in-advertising aspect: "stupid", "dumb" and "retarded". But who knows, maybe kids around the globe are feeling it. (???!) Quotable & anecdotal posts are appreciated.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 26 August 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

that "got my Vans on, but they look like sneakers" song was hyphy right?

if "hyphy" means "slick mainstream production + rapping about awesome stupid shit that used to be the domain of backpackers", then doesn't it necessarily follow that it is the greatest thing ever?

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Saturday, 26 August 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I know E-40's like Mr. Hyphy now, but what's "Federal" considered?

treechewer (Maximillions), Saturday, 26 August 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

it's just rap to me...

...shit by any other name still stinks

doesn't seem like they're saying anything new...

Hi Marissa.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 26 August 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty shitty to my ears. Like backpack shit gone undercover or something.

I love hyphy. I don't know all the ins and outs of everything, but what I've heard just completely hits my spot.

fagit

Sally Forth (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

You know, your multiple personality disorder isn't fooling anyone. It still says "pete38" by each of your posts. Posing as a woman to call people "fagit". Death by irony.

Rodn y Greene (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

you know i love you baby

psycho pete (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

i mean legitly i thought the notion of hyphy hitting your spot was at least some form of faggotry, which i have little to qualm with

psycho pete (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, i agree with the message, but they have vocal inflections that are dichotometrically homosecshewal, which i can totally sympathize with, being a gay-adjescent

psycho pete (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:37 (nineteen years ago)

but at least they don't hit my spot. when i go for gay in hiphop i dig the hardest-core, least gay spectacle to get off on, thereby increasing my chances to get killed whilst jacking

psycho pete (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, who doesnt masturbate to kandinky with a backround of paul barman mached up with the copy of bg's living legend that skips on track 15 on your car stereo and starting with like 6 on your black friend's cd player?

psycho pete (pete38), Sunday, 27 August 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)
