And the NY Times has an actually interesting music story for once.

I'm glad I didn't post the C/D on him I was just about to do.

His thing seems very quintessentially Asian: Take a bit of American culture that's 20 years out-of-style and overdo it so well that it becomes its own thing. Mate it to another bit of Western culture (Patchelbel) so as to convince the viewer that Asia discovered Western culture yesterday, and it's all the same to them.

What makes this so great? Seems like something I've seen CC Deville do a zillion times.

Don't web guitar guys have to play like Mick Barr or Buckethead to get any sort of shine?

I think you have to be somewhat tone-deaf to be able to appreciate the essential athleticism of the performance.

Kinda like watching some how can knit faster than anyone else... ok, but is the sweater new and intersting??? Think not. Recycling Van Halen ideas/technique (more of less) no matter how well executed is very old hat... and that's coming from a very old guy...

I'll gladly take anything with Sonny Sharrock's name on it over any of these wankers in a heartbeat.

Sonny Sharrock? Now yer talkin'! Forget the weeweeweewee wanks and get with Sonny...

He doesn't play like EVH. His technique is very impressive.

And this is a poor analogy. Performance is a primary aspect of music, and typically not any part of knitting. And this video was clearly focused on performance, not composition or innovation or knitting or tap-dancing.

This reminds me most of the Kiss Argent cover at the end of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, or the Extreme song played in the mall scene of Excellent Adventure. I was terribly bored about halfway through, and I actually own a CD with 15 different arrangements of Pachelbel's canon.

why?

You need to get into X-treme knitting, dude.

I have Eno's rendering of this as mp3. Got sick of it during the world cup, it was hawking Coca Cola twice every ad break. I don't need to see this.
Time for tea.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Monday, 28 August 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

Not the Eno arrangement. I don't think Coca Cola would use that. I reaaallyy need tea.
