Good artists that overlooked by Pitchfork

Creating this thread came to mind when I was searching for a review of Cut Copy on Pitchfork. To my surprise there's none. Cut Copy is on ILM and Stylus best-of-year list! So what's the most obvious misses that Pitchfork have done?

Gerling. I really can't grasp how NO ONE in the states has really picked up on them yet.

I don't think The Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters was reviewed. Their latest, Pet Grief was however.

Pitchfork has featured Cut Copy in the news a number of times but I can't find a record review, it's true.

I was hoping Pitchfork would review "Back To Basics". Seriously.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

and why not?

I'd be interested to know how Pitchfork (or indeed other websites) decide on what to review. It surely can't just be a case of who so ever sends a promo copy and some lube? I understand that's how newspaper sections function. Is it strictly music with American distribution or does that matter to them in the net-age.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

well, clearly "the debt collection" by the shortwave set. this, i feel, is about to be rendered even more ridiculous by the iminent and immense "casual use".

edger stewert (edger), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Did they review Lisa Germano's current one? I don't remember seeing anything (and their search function seems bust). Haven't gotten around to it myself yet.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Is it strictly music with American distribution

Definitely not. I'm pretty sure "Silent Shout" had no American distribution at the time of its review, among others. Obviously the goal is to break new artists, and to squeeze in as many indie bands as possible, with a few token mainstrean (Tool, RHCP) and rap (Clipse) acts thrown in. It would be refreshing to see non-indie music gain representation (like that dirrty girl, obviously) instead of some She Wants Revenge knockoff.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be interested to know how Pitchfork (or indeed other websites) decide on what to review

some of it is assigned by the editorial staff, some of it's pitched by the writers

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

instead of some She Wants Revenge knockoff.

Haha, when was the last time this happened?

Year Future.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Looking at the server for the 'old' version of the website The Organ were reviewed twice-- the sinking hearts ep (bowers; august 4, 2003) and grab that gun (ubl; january 13, 2005) (GTG should have been rated higher, boo...I think I voted for that in the 2004 year-end list). Not sure how those got lost in the transition-- or why it's not even showing up in Google-- but I'll copy those old reviews into the new cms soonish.

Going back to 03 or so (I wasn't paying close enough attention prior to that), Cut Copy is probably the oddest omission-- hell, I think every editor on staff likes them! I can't recall how that slipped through the cracks. Gerling...I dunno. If something as great as "Dust Me Selecta" had come out the past few years, we'd have reviewed that. I don't think P4k 2001 noticed it at the time. (and I guess I should check them out again? Maybe they are still releasing music that good.)

I wish I'd have pushed more for Rachel Stevens and Sugababes to have LP reviews, so I guess that's my thread contriubution, although they've been covered in tracks-- especially Stevens. Back to Basics...I can't say there are plans to review that and there has been plenty of back and forth on that. (Perhaps oddly then, Kelis will be reviewed tomorrow, and Beyonce and Timberlake will be eventually-- all by Tim Finney, btw. Timberlake's never had an LP review before, the others have-- tasty and a d's child comp. I don't think Dangerously in Love was reviewed)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

The Organ reviews are showing up on the new site for me!

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

also I would love to read a review from j-shep on the new Aguilera album!

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

the new aguilera album. is it good??

oh, wrinklepaws! (Wrinklepaws), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

the new aguilera album. is it good??

I love the first disc (minus the most perversely egotistical final track to ever grace an album). Otherwise, it' solid throughout with no filler. Haven't listened to the second disc very much yet. It sounds like more of a grab-bag.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

One overlooked artist less today! 7.5 baby

Erroneous Botch (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

Umm...doesn't anyone care that Year Future has released the best punk album thus far in '06?

that is a Killing Joke.

micarl (micarl), Sunday, 3 September 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

They didn't review the CD I sent them. And any website that overlooked by Doctor Casino is no website at all. Also, the last The Blow EP deserved a titanic press bonanza.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 4 September 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

No Doctor Casino, no credibility.

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 4 September 2006 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Jay Haze has ever been reviewed on Pitchfork, but then again, he's not mentioned here much either. Love for a Strange World is probably one of my favorite records of last year.
