the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't care much for him until yesterday evening, when I despairingly turned to Planet Rock, only to hear (after the obligatory Ace Of Spades) some sick-ass tune with a MEGA gee-tar solo tacked onto the end. "What is this wonderment?" I thought, before discovering afterwards that it was in fact "Like A Hurricane" by our man Neil.

I now kinda like him.

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

vinnie doesn't like neil. but vinnie likes clapton, so there you go.

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

People who don't like Neil just don't understand rock music. It's really that simple.

great, but if he never recorded a song after Comes A Time (or thereabouts, i'm a little fuzzy on the chronology of his records), i'd rate him much higher.

xpost - he no pussy

Of course everyone likes him. This is my favourite:

I can honestly say I don't like neil. it's an instinctive thing. my ears violently object to that thin, reedy whine.

Domenico Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I don't like Neil Young, I have a copy of "Decade" unplayed still. Quite like "Like a hurricane" and that one about "my my we're all crazy now" or whatever, but there it is.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

His political opinions over the years have made me wonder whether he's hopelessly naive, a straight-out opportunist or just, y'know, insane. From "Let's Roll" to "Life During Wartime" in a few years. And what DID Chris Rock say? I assume it's a reference to that first 9/11 benefit thing? When I hear that line I just picture Neil pondering sternly on old Rock comedy routines, and it sort of spoils the moment.

I like him well enough. "Freedom" is my favourite, especially the love songs. Fuck understanding Rock music tho.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

I have a friend who I think considers Neil Young an asshole and refuses to listen to him because of the whole "Southern Man" thing, but I'm pretty sure he's never even heard a Neil Young track.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

i have never heard neil young.

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

There's a shitload of people who don't like Neil — or Dylan, for that matter — solely because of his voice.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

"he ever do an album as good as teh first kiss elpee?"

Yep - it's called Landing On Water. And even that's still about ten times as good as the first Kiss album.

hi dere! (i've got it)

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Was expecting this to be a Young Ones thread as well.

The thing about Neil Young is that people who don't like him just haven't heard the song that will pull them over into the other camp. Such a restless discography.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Q27: Tell us what you think of the following bands and artists.
/.../
l. Neil Young

A: I would prefer believe that he sings as though there were something that needed to be sung, and plays guitar as though there were phrases that needed to be played, not because of his convictions but because of his physical make-up.

So, does Tori Kudo or does he not like Neil, then?...

tiit (tiit), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like the Neil Young songs I've heard, but I guess I just haven't heard that magic song etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

his lyrics get pretty terrible. how could you not like his voice and guitar though? they're just too good

xave (xave), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

I used to like Neil but his fans make me wanna deny him, thrice, the cock.

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

i like his guitaring a lot, but can rarely get past the annoying voice, and don't give me that shit about not having heard the right song, because my dad was a big NY fan when I was growing up and i'm pretty sure i've heard his entire discography up to about 4 years ago.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm begging here!

J (Jay), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

when Neil is good, he's one of my favorite musical artist, but when he's bad, oh lord is it painful....

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big Neil Young fan, but one thing that perplexes me about
him: in his early years with Buffalo Springfield and on his
first album he perfected writing ethereal psychedelic pop songs
like "Broken Arrow" and "Expecting To Fly," and then he just
totally turned his back on that style of song for ever and all
time. Sucko.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I also don't like what happened to his voice in the early
70s but what the hell. He's still a guitar god.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

When I was about 15, and already a Canuckophile, "Like A Hurricane" was the first song I heard by him, and its combination of red plaid flannel, foggy trippiness and mad-abandon one-note extended guitar solo(s) stretched out like a screaming heart string forced me to go locate and purchase the 45 rpm vinyl disc at the first possible opportunity. I still love that song. The other day, I bought this on DVD and I was gobsmacked anew by Neil. It's like the intersection of earnest folk music, drugs, Star Wars ("Road Eyes" = Jawas?), plaid, drugs, Beverley Hillbillies farm kitsch, Hendrix, the Beatles, drugs, squealing custom black Gibson Les Pauls, drugs, punk rock, bizarro-world giant blues harps and mic stands, Crazy Horse, Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirts (Jack Daniel's spoof sported by bassist Billy Talbot) and drugs. And dancing Jawa-likes. And an audience rarely seen but heard and certainly felt. Oh, and barnstorming synapse-severing versions of the aforementioned "Like A Hurricane", "Cinnamon Girl", "Hey Hey My My", "Cortez the Killer" and, yes, "Powderfinger". If you anyway like his voice (which I accept isn't a given), this is an essential concert film.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Just had to let that out.

Whoah dude!

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

Alls I know is that Crazy Horse is the lamest, most boring backing band I have ever heard.

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

i have a friend who hates him because of his guitar playing. his singing too, i guess, but mostly the guitar. my friend's a musician, but a fastidious music-school type musician, and i guess he doesn't cotton to the aesthetics of slop.

I don't like Neil at all, and in fact I want the ten seconds it's even taking me to write this back.

Why would you bother with Neil when there are so many Yngwie Malmsteen records to listen to!?

Oh, and barnstorming synapse-severing versions of the aforementioned ..."Cortez the Killer"

RUINED by neil's odd passages of cod-jamaican patois.
