wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

hang ooonnn... Lord of this World is one of their most famous songs innit?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Lord Of This World always felt kinda overshadowed by Sweet Leaf to me. the thread is asking for well-known bands so obviously stuff isn't going to be as obscure as jandek or something, and re: beatles,
I'd argue that there's tons of beatles songs that are relatively overlooked compared to the hits but i see your point, stuff like "flying" and "it's only a northern song" are basically famous for being overlooked by now

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

OK, how about "Plenty of Jam Jars" as an overlooked beatles song.

OK, there might be a reason for that!

9. The Beatles - "Savoy Truffle"

"She's Got Everything" and "I'm In Touch With Your World" OTM!

musically (musically), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

I have to veto the following I'm afraid:

43. Beach Boys - Til I Die
This is a flagship song for the Beach Boys' classic 70s period and barring the title track, the highlight on "Surf's Up" which is considered by many to be their best album, so sorry I can't parse this.

40. John Lennon-#9 Dream
Similarly, this appears on most JL hits collections and I know is revered by many Ilxors.

Although "Savoy Truffle" might be the closest we've got to an overlooked Beatles song. Can't say it's my favourite, but it's entertaining and not mentioned too often despite being on a major album. "Try Not To Breathe" is a great REM track but seems to get lost among the bumper crop of hits fronting Automatice For The People. Many people, myself included forget it even exists.

Other examples like "Absolute Beginners" by Bowie and "End Of A Century" by Blur are arguable. The former was a big hit and appeared in a movie, the latter was also a hit (third single from an album) and featured a very catchy hook. It's true that these songs do get overshadowed in the canon though. Personally I'd have been tempted to replace "End Of A Century" with some of the great lost Blur album tracks like "Jubilee" (rollicking punk stuff with hilarious "Hours of RUBBISH" pronunciation) or maybe "Look Inside America" which really should've been an A-side instead of the boring "MOR".

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

8. Zombies - I Want Her She Wants Me

(agree?)

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

7. The Police "Does everyone stare this way at you"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

6.5. R.e.m. "Harbourcoat"
6. R.e.m. "Leave"
5. R.e.m. "Exhuming McCarthy"
4. R.e.m. "Little America"
3. R.e.m. "Monty Got a Raw Deal"
2. R.e.m. "Electrolite"
1. R.e.m. "Let Me In"

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

Leave and Electrolite are the best songs on New Adventures In Hi-Fi. Possibly the best songs in their latter period.

We may as well carry this thread on past 100.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

Wogan has some points, but a lotta stuff doesn't get heard these days the way it did then. And I don't remember "Absolute Beginners," for instance, getting *tons* of airplay.

As for the R.E.M. stuff above, all of which I like . . . er, yeah. Lots of us actually did go to college.

Replace "Savoy Truffle" with "You Know My Name" and we're good. In fact, make that Number One.

Number Two: "Pogo Pogo" by Plastic Bertrand.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

I just remembered that both of those R.e.m. singles from New Adventures of Hi-Fi got play on my radio for like a week or something small like that and their two biggest hits from the album being "Bittersweet Me" and "E-bow the Letter." I don't think the other R.e.m. songs were even singles. R.e.m. is rad, though, eh?

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Panic In Detroit"

not a veto...but interestingly this song was on constant rotation at my local FM station ca 73-74 in lieu of anything from Ziggy Stardust. And this was in Cincinnai, not Detroit! go figua.
