I like to chill out to musicians like Jamie Cullum, Norah Jones, K.D. Lang... newer jazz mostly. It's calm and relaxing. Just recently I stumbled upon Madeleine Peyroux. I looked her up and her first record came out about ten years ago, but I've heard some of the tracks off of her new one, 'Half the Perfect World' and they're great. It's a mix of covers and originals and her voice is gorgeous. I loved it so I thought I'd pass on the word since sometimes it's hard to come across newer jazz musicians. There are clips and more info on madeleinepeyroux.com, give her a listen!

Why does chill-out people never want to listen to that annoying cymbal-tapping sound in jazz drumming?

My Little Ruud Book (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

You might wanna try modern jazz performers cos they're more likely to make the noises you're looking for.

We should have a JD society that communicates via email and sends YSIs that way. Or you guys should, and I could watch until I'm ready to contribute (i.e. about when that Soul Jazz tribute to the '00s comes out). And if anyone wants to know what the society/club is, you/we can say, "Oh, it's a JD thing," and they'll think we're all lawyers or something instead of just a bunch of internet music geeks.

Wow, none of that was supposed to sound as sarcastic as I think it does.

I have started a google group for this purpose, and added everyone from the original "Lonely Woman" thread. Google flagged it, because for a startup group it is so large, and it may be a couple of days before it becomes usable. I'll keep you up to date.

Will you be trading Madeleineg Peyroux rekkids?

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

check Jamie's email. address. Fontana=Fontana Records, now a subsidiary of Mercury under the UNIVERSAL MUSIC GRP umbrella.

expect to see more of this corporate shilling in the coming months.

at least he/she didn't try to hide their affiliation!

there was an infamous (IMO) thread on ILM a year or two back where a onetime regular asked for jazz recommendations along the line of Madeliene and Norah Jones, and then proceeded to dismiss Thelonious Monk as being "instrumentally oriented." Sigh. It's almost enough to make you want to listen to Winston Marsalis.

the jazz douchebag tag still bugs the shit out of me.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

At least Madeling is ashamed enough of her music to go into hiding.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

I guess the Google group invitation to me will bounce. I recently switched from DSL to cable modem, so the bellsouth address is nothing but a good spam filter now. The real one is (same front part) at vista hyphen express dot com.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

And fucking hell, I forgot that Jamie had Email Notifications turned on.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Pandora.com keeps playing me jazz tracks I like, but sometimes they are phony jazz. Ethnojazztronica--and I end up liking it! Bad taste, eh? Who is Rattlemouth? Really not bad. I think I might buy Nu-Bop too, now that I've heard a bit more of it.
