Prompted by a thrilling youtube clip, I am listening to Raymond Scott's Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights for the first time in ages. The song "Twilight in Turkey" includes the aformentioned schoolyard sing-song tune. Is this really the beginning? I always had the idea this was just one of those things lost in the mists of time.

# Claimed to have been originally written by Sol Bloom as "Little Egypt" in 1893.
# Copyrighted as "The Streets Of Cairo or The Poor Little Country Maid" by James Thornton in 1895
# Said to be an ancient Arabic popular song called "Kradoutja."

Hmmm...

According to the book The Devil in the White City, it was written during the Chicago World's Fair, which I'd guess is mentioned in one of those links. Good book, and I hope the story told in it is true.

This subject came up in my life this weekend due to a viewing of Vintage Mickey; in one very early Disney 'toon -- somewhat before Disney became the gold standard in family entertainment -- Minnie Mouse is a hoochie-koochie dancer at a carnival.

Malcolm Mooney's dadaistic variants on "The Hootchy Kootchy Dance" on Can's Rite Time album are awesome.
