Art Bears S/D

It looks like there's a Henry Cow S/D, but no thread specifically for Art Bears, so, I guess I'll start a one.

I saw Hopes and Fears in a used bin the other day. Hearing *of* it but never having actually heard it, the price was right so I decided to go ahead purchase the album.
I gave it a listen, and the songs just didn't sit right.
I was going to ask ILM to help me appreciate it, but decided to give it another listen.
I must have been in the wrong space, or wanting the wrong things when I was listening to it, because it now sounds great.

So, I really don't know much about the Art Bears. Is their other stuff worth seeking out?

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

YES

Winter Songs is my favorite. So excellent.

If you like Dagmar's voice and go for more op/song oriented stuff, the Slapp Happy albums "Sort Of" and "Acnalbasac Noom" are seriously two of my favorite albums ever.

Also search "Collapse", the B-side of the "Rats And Monkeys" single. It might be on some CD reissue now, I dunno.

Slapp Happy is the greatest band ever.

I have much Art Bears but it's def. more Henry Cow then Slapp Happy and can't say I spend much time listening to them.

paging mr leone, mr leone there's a phone call for you.

i've got two of their albums and both are in the for sale pile :(

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

but you would never sell Slapp Happy, would you?

sleeve version 2.0 (sleeve testing), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

I sold Sort Of! (That's the only one I ever bought.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think i've heard slapp happy.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to Tim, but will work for jaxon as well...

sadness!

Acnalbasac Noom is better. It might be my favorite record ever made. Sort Of gets a little dragged down by the songs Blegvad sings.

Art Bears came up briefly on this thread

My Little Ruud Book (Ken L), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

search: all of it (and check milton's remix on the box!)
destroy: none of it

Art Bears were completely great. (sometimes I can't believe I live so close to Frith, purely on stuff he did with this band.) I think what I love most about them was the fact that they applied so much sonic experimentation and tricks w/form to *songs*. It's really in inspiring sound. I wish they got more due outside RIO circles (esp as I like them a lot more than I like most HC), but might be that they're still a bit ahead of the curve

faves are TWAIIT -> Winter Songs ->Hopes and Fears, but they're all great

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hopes and Fears is definitely their weakest album. The other two are immortal classics. I heard a few of the remixes from the Art Box and they seemed utterly pointless.

OTM about Blegvad on Sort Of. "Tutankhamen"? please. Though the rest is some of their best stuff.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

(and Desperate Straights is almost as good as the Art Bears records)

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

Art Bears are great - musically so inspiring, its a pity the lyrics are so naive.
About Slapp Happy: I own Sort Of (not so good) and Acnalbasac Noom (excellent, the title track is an entire Eric Ambler novel condensed in a 3 minutes pop song). I should check Desperate Straights too, I guess.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really liking this the more I listen to it, so if Hopes and Fears is the weakest, I'm now curious to hear the other albums.
So I guess that Art Box is recommended, then?
Maybe I'll check that out.

And sleeve, is that "Collapse" different from the one on Hopes and Fears? Or maybe the one I picked up has bonus tracks. But yeah, that track stood out.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

Don't like "Hopes and Fears" very much - this is the one that was originally supposed to be a Henry Cow record? The vocal counterpart to "Western Culture"? Haven't heard their other albums. Oh, there is a good song on "Hopes and Fears", it sounds like the Who!

dud Hab 'C' dEva (Dada), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

As for Slappy Happy, I'm going to break with ILM orthodoxy and say that I much prefer "Casablanca Moon" to "Acnalbasac Noom". However, I think the weaker tracks on Casablanca are better on Acnalbasac (i.e. "Dawn" and "Halfway There") and I prefer the version of "Michelangelo".

Anyone gots the News From Babel stuff? Thoughts?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if the Art Box is to be recommended or not--my impression was that the original cd versions didn't sound that good, but I also read that the remastered versions on the Box were not good. I don't own either, just vinyl.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

the art box is a bit of overkill and the 2 remix cds are things i'll never listen to but the booklet is terrific. all of these are available as separate cds from rerusa or rermegacorp.

as for the remastering, well, i think they sound fantastic especially when compared to the original cd releases - expansive, detailed and full of depth. (and they sound just great when compared to my scratchy 20 year old vinyl). i really don't understand where this idea of poor remastering has come from.

i've always loved H&F but i found the others dull - but this could have just been post-punk making me ignore them at the time. still don't like the last one much but 'winter songs' really came to life for me with the remastered cd.

slapp happy - well, i love all their stuff as i've said on this board before. don't diss blegvad's voice either - tutankhamun IS trite but i still find it kind of jolly but his best slapp happy moment is 'strayed' from desperate straights.

henry cow's concerts 2 cd has been remastered and should be arriving on my doorstep this month - apparently the muddy mid-range of the vinyl and original cd has all been clarified. can't wait.

phil turnbull (philT), Saturday, 2 September 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

The old Art Bears CDs aren't the greatest, but at least they have some top end. The remasters don't. The 45 rpm Nimbus pressings are amazing sounding, and none of these CDs come close to them. Still, I think the original CD issues, while not perfect, are superior to the recent ones. Compare both CD versions of 'The World As It Is Today'. The remaster is botched badly. Where the hell did all the top end go?? I can tell you: it flew away when the engineer fed the tape through the noise reduction plugin. Now listen for the NR artifacts throughout. Fun!

Sadly, this is the case for ALL of the ReR remasters. Cutler must be going deaf if he believes any of these sound decent.

One consolation: at least ReR isn't involving themselves in the loudness wars and compressing the hell out of the music.

Hot Hot Heat (Hot Hot Heat), Sunday, 3 September 2006 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

Mox Twelve, I'm pretty sure that you have the same version of "Collapse".

Speaking of remaster issues, I was bemused that the reissue of "Acnalbasac" had fucked up indexing, with "Michelangelo" and "The Drum" together as a single track. Seemed like a weird mistake for such a lovingly done reissue.

sleeve version 2.0 (sleeve testing), Monday, 4 September 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Pick up "World As It Is Today". It's my favourite album from Camp Cow. The guitar takes a back seat (for once)... instead you get terrific piano bang-a-longs with no silliness from Dagmar.

I got a vinyl copy and it came with a zine inside. You can still find the vinyl for less than $20 every month on eBay. It's totally worth it...

Especially because the remasters aren't so hot. "Hopes And Fears" is a bad sounding record to start with.

Owen Pallett (Owen Pallett), Saturday, 9 September 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think because I heard "Hopes and Fears" first,
and because it took a bit of investment to understand and enjoy (and the associations I've made with it),
it'll now always have some precedence over WAIIT and WS, even if the other records trump it in sound quality/accessibility.

I don't think I'll go for that box (yet), but I did finally found those other two Art Bears CDs, and wow.

Slapp Happy rules, too.

And Owen, awesome, yeah, ideally I'd like them on vinyl, so that's a good tip.

Yeah, and all points brought forth about the sound quality, now I hear the comparisons, and the poor quality is a bit of a nuisance

I love 'em. Hopes and Fears is actually my favorite; I like Henry Cow's sound but their records are unfocused to my ear, but Hopes and Fears takes what I love about the Cow and applies it to more conventional song structures.

Art Bears Songbook - All Live!
Festival International Musique Actuelle Victoriaville: Day 5 - May 19, 2008 ------ Zeena Parkins, Julia Eisenberg, Kristin Slipp, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt

it does take them a few songs to warm up, and the tinny audience recording basically already means Fans Only. but: live version of 'Rats and Monkeys' is its own brand new thing, and we finally get to hear the melody of 'Albion, Awake' sung with the original lyrics, which Dagmar refused to perform because she found them too disturbing

It'd be great if they played in the UK but I can't see it happening, as prog fests here consist largely of Pendragon and their ilk. Any ilxors going to the RIOfest?
