Bands that everybody loved, at their apex, and now nobody does (or seems to)

I saw the "f*****g Woodentops" mentioned on another thread, and remembered that everyone loved them at the time. I was pretty indifferent and "meh". Now, who says so?

Similarly, Carter. I saw them at Reading Festival to a packed field all waving arms and You fatbastard. Now, I still have and enjoy "Straw Donkey - the singles" cassette I picked up in Thailand (a legitimate copy!) but again, vast majority seem embarassed.

Isn't this the concept behind the entire UK music press?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, there are still some Mansun fans knocking about.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I never liked that avalanches album. Good call!

dud Hab 'C' dEva (Dada), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

So this is a thread where people say, "yeah but i didn't like them THEN either". good stuff.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

optional. Liked Carter (didn't "love" them, admittedly, wouldn't play "Worry Bomb" again and I only bought it at the time because "Ooh look, free live album" which was that decade's "Free DVD" enticement. I should close that bracket now. I shall.)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

Tortoise?

dud Hab 'C' dEva (Dada), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oasis?

OK not everybody, but back in '94/95 even I liked them. One of my friends was a complete fanatic about them, bought a signed copy of Cigarettes & Alcohol etc. He's faintly embarrassed about them now.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Nobody likes the Avalances anymore? I must be the uncoolest girl in the world.

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

That would be Suede, then.

xpost, as the originator of the "f**king Woodentops" aside: Most of the Woodentops Love was post-Balearic, was it not? Whereas pre-Balearic, they inspired little love beyond the indie-chart-watcher diehards.

(NB. I thought Rollo out of the Woodentops was Rollo out of Faithless for the longest time...)

Tortoise?

Man, if only.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody genuinely still love Air?

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Judging by all the fucking assholes with guitars that insist on making bars annoying and always playing that one Oasis song, yeah, people still like them.

haha. good thread. i think about this subject a fair bit. more to come

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

jesus, sebadoh too? the who? wtf?

Sebadoh is fairly obvious. But The Who is a sadder case. I love them, but people just don't seem to care anymore. Maybe it's too many reunion tours, the Townsend Internet stuff, or just changing trends, but they just released an excellent "mini opera" and nobody seems to care. Paris fucking Hilton's thread has probably 300 times the posts.

The days of them selling out seven nights at Giants Stadium are long gone.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

i think everybody still loves the who's best material. my collection really wouldn't be the same without 'live at leeds' and 'who's next'. or 'tommy' and 'quadrophenia' come to that. they really aren't the sort of band who could live their past glories down.

oh and i really like air. not even a guilty pleasure

The Four Aces

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

Woodentops hatred makes me sad. Okay, I don't really give a goat's scrote about most of their stuff, but 'Well Well Well' was a cracking tune. Bags of fizz, huge bass and totally ear-splitting snares.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 September 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Weirdly, the Woodentops seem to have just reformed:
http://myspace.com/thewoodentops

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 September 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

the woodentops were never the same after they had the biggest spotty dog you ever did see put down for biting those children...

woodentops supported the bunnymen at the second gig i ever saw, don't you know.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Wooden tops? Bunny Men? Who was headlining, tELEtUBBIES?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

i had the well well well ep! i didn't care much for the album that came after that though. they lost some of their pep. when are the bluebells gonna re-form? i wish i had cath to listen to right now?

Kula Shaker

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

(At least everybody who wasn't automatically opposed to any new 60s influenced English guitar band playing melodic songs with verse and chorus did love them around the "K" album and the "Tattva" single)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Stereo MCs

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Stereolab - They've been doing quality work for years, but I think people are worn down by their sheer quantity of releases.

Matt Olken (Moodles), Monday, 4 September 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was indifferent to Oasis until Don't Believe The Truth.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 4 September 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Monday, 4 September 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

How on earth could Wilco not have come up yet?

douglas eklund (skolle), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

Cos of the everybody loved bit.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

BECAUSE THEY'RE STILL FECKIN' BRILLIANT, THAT'S WHY. Their last two (three? four?) studio LPs have been works of magnificence and anyone who disses them is merely trying to be trendy. God, I feel almost as outraged as Major Alfonso when I attacked the pride of his nation just earlier!

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, I am disappointed.

I don't quite get the fervour Wilco whip up, I really don't

bad hair day house (fandango), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

anyone who disses them is merely trying to be trendy

Before I get ripped to pieces, lemme just say that this bit wasn't entirely 100% serious. :-) In fact, many people probably loved Wilco because they were 'in-vogue'. Those that still do (like myself), however, love them because of the (in our opinions) awesome music.

Off to bed now, but don't call me on that bit, it was intended as gentle ribbage.

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

Wilco has always been dullsville, never, ever understood it, kind of like Radiohead (oops!)

douglas eklund (skolle), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

You attacked the pride of my nation? Oh dear... you'll need to do more than merely disliking the Pogues. I'm not exactly a defender of the faith or anything either

In any case forget Wilco.

Ryan Adams. Do editors want to stick him on covers any more?

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

Haberdager with the scoop, Wilco fans like Wilco because of their awesome music!

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Sebadoh is fairly obvious.

i still love sebadoh. but it's been a while since i've heard anyone talk about liars.

Anything on Mo'Wax.
(Ninja Tune still holding on though).

Huey in Melbourne (Huey in Melbourne), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Stereolab's lead female vox got hit by a car in London and died. I think this has alot to do with it.

As for Air... They just put out Talkie Walkie two years ago and it wasn't a bad album.

Avalanches, Primal Scream, and The Killers (in two years)

Mike M. (FirstBass), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Mary Hansen (the one that died) mostly did the backing vocals, and Lætitia Sadier is the one who sings lead and writes the lyrics.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

(I'm not a big Stereolab person, correct me if I'm wrong, etc.)
