OK, in case any bands are reading:

DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN THE TRAILER THAT YOU CANNOT REPLACE.

LOAD THAT SHIT INTO YOUR HOTEL ROOM.

EVEN IF YOU ARE HIGH OR REALLY DRUNK OR IT'S REALLY LATE.

BECAUSE MOTHERFUCKERS WILL TAKE THAT SHIT FROM YOU IF YOU DON'T.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE RULE.

K THX BYE.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

I feel bad but at the same time - "oh yeah I'll just leave my '59 Jazzmaster in the trailer": wtfingf, dude

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, Dino Jr. are deluding themselves. They will never get this shit back.

Flopsy (Flopsy), Saturday, 2 September 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

cheap bastards, next time don't stay in LIC, bitchez.

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 2 September 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Sonic Youth recently get some of the stuff back that was stolen from them way back when? But for reals... How many bands have to get shit stolen before they take better security measures??

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 2 September 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

and all this time i thought you only needed water and dirt to make mud.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 2 September 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

dont they have roadies? wtf?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 2 September 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think the roadies did it.

That's a truckload of gear. So either someone took the entire truck or roadies shifted it to their own U-Haul truck.

I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit (I say we take off and nuke the), Monday, 4 September 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

*Rory Gallagher Stratocaster new SN# R25507 - has a big gold grover tuning peg on low E*

I am surprised at this, for some reason.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

Why, PJM?

The Jazzmasters will eventually be discovered unless someone is prepared to do a LOT of work disguising them.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Because of Rory Gallagher's name. Not very punk rock, is it? No technical insight or anything like that. I am also surprised that his guitars are called Jazzmasters.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 4 September 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

Mascis is a huge guitar head, not an "I play whatever" punk rock dude

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

I am also surprised that his guitars are called Jazzmasters.

"Jazzmaster" is just the name of the guitar. I don't think many jazz players actually ever use/d them. About 20-25yrs ago, you could pick them up for next to nothing, and they were a really good deal if you wanted an interesting old guitar. Not anymore, obviously. IIRC, Mascis got into jazzmasters when he was young, b/c he wanted an old Fender electric guitar with a worn-in neck, and by then old Stratocasters were on the vintaj banwagon, thus too expensive.

Rory Gallagher was an excellent guitarist who is liked by many electric guitarists pretty much regardless of genre they play in.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

hey while we're on this question, which guitar does anybody think will be the next "you used to be able to buy 'em cheap" guitar? I say G&L ASAT Classics, they're pretty cheap now but their tone and handling is completely great, and they age beautifully

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

I always wanted a sunburst Jazzmaster after seeing Television do 'Foxhole' on the Old Grey Whistle Test.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 September 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, G&L is a good call, Thomas.

I nearly bought a 25 year old Fender today for less than £200. Anyone guess what model? I passed in the end as I owned one before and it was a complete dog, also I want to buy a Jazzmaster soon.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 4 September 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

agree on the G&L -- I've been coveting one of those for a while now.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if the remember-when-they-were-cheap thing works anymore. Back when j'masters were cheap, there was a real massive quality gap between what you might call a beginner's instrument and older "name" gear, that's def not so much the case. Stuff that comes to mind is pretty obscure - '90s talmans, late '70's kawais, perhaps. OTOH, I sometimes wonder if the whole prs-style furniture guitar thing might actually come crashing down in price in years to come. I don't see many G&Ls for sale used, and the ones I have seen haven't been cheap, though this might be a UK regional thing, of course.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

I got my Gretsch Country Club for £450 back when I moved house, 1987 or so.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Most of those G&Ls seem to be ebay shops (which are a pain in the ass when yer looking for used stuff)

how much do you think this talman will go for?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I just remembered, the guy I write music with has a thing for Ibanez Roadstar 2s, he now has 3, including the top of the range "Steve Lukather" model, which he got for pocket money, ridiculously cheap. They seem to be very very cheap generally, considering the quality of the instrument you get, so that's probably a contender?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 4 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

The demand for jaguars/jazzmasters are not because they are great guitars (this is arguable), but that they are unbelievably trendy! Let's not confuse quality with commodity.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 September 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

man thats a mouth-watering selection of JMs

joe pass i think was the only jazz guy to really play on one, and its not like it was his main ax or anything

millenarian (millenarian), Monday, 4 September 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Steve a good Jazzmaster has a really great feel to it on the fretboard I think. Jags, yeah, the main thing is the look, but it's such a fuckin' awesome look that how can you hate on people wanting a guitar that looks so cool?

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 4 September 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Did these guys do anything other than that song "Feel the Pain" and if they did, should I care?

christopherscottknudsen (christopherscottknudsen), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

"Start Choppin'", sunshine!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

I remember J Mascis having a light green guitar, and doing all his own amps and leads and stuff, in a slouchy manner.

I hope he gets his stuff back.

Now that the guitar people are here, what is a good beginner's guitar, just to mess around on?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

Fender Mustang.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

How much do you want to spend, PJM?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

That one looks good.

I don't know, Doc. Is £100 possible without it being total shit?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

£200 is def. possible. £100, I don't know.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think £100 is possible. I'd say some of the Squiers and Epiphones for £150-£200 are not bad at all. I don't really know much about copys but Vintage seem to have a good reputation - their Strat copies are supposed to be very good. Others - Yamaha's low-end guitars? Stagg?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

low end yamaha pacificas are supposed to be really good for the money.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

I've got a Squier Strat and I think it's fine for £120. Well it was £120 when I bought it about 6 years ago, but I don't think they've gone up much.

For a beginner's guitar it does the job, it sounds OK and doesn't fall out of tune really easily or anything annoying like that.

I'd add the caveat that 6 years later I'm still not much better than a beginner... probably nothing to do with the guitar though.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps I will save up for twice as long then.

Thank you.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Does DinoJr have insurance on their gear? You can insure gear, guys.

And one black backpack with Sony headphones, tools, etc.

"etc" = J MASCIS W33DSTASH

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, sure, it won't get back exact "Rory Gallagher jazzmaster with ghetto-rigged tuning peg", but it's better than being high and dry.

captain reverend gandalf jesus (nickalicious), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

My first guitar was a low-end Yamaha and it was still playing fairly well the day it got, um, stolen. (Or lost; there is still some debate on this point.)

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I've been wondering when some present-day "punk" band will be punk enough to revive those really poofy '80s hair-metal guitars. Like those pointy pink Charvels or polka-dot Randy Rhoads-style flying Vs or whatever they were...

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, Ash have been playing Flying V guitars for about 10 years...

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

and Bob Mould was using themin the mid-80s anyway

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

I first read that as "and Bob Mould was using theremin in the mid-80s anyway"

it was a pretty amusing mental image
