Taking Sides: Pavement Vs. Gary Young

Personally, I'll take the fun, sing-a-longable "Plant Man" over that boring, over-hyped, pretentious "Shady Lane" shit any day.

aren't you the fine contrarian upsetting popular convention with such a bold choice?

Hahaha, this thread ain't gonna be pretty.
I do prefer the drumming on those Pavement records with Gary, but he was apparently a bitch to work with live and "Hospital" is a pretty patchy record. Plant Man itself (especially the video with Thurston Moore dressed as a tree) is fucking classic, though.
Wowee Zowee and Crooked Rain >>>> Hospital, btw.

"Shady Lane" isn't fun and singalongable?

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

I mean seriously, of all the songs to pick as a contrast...

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I LOVE Shady Lane. I think I'd still have to take the last two Pavement records over Hospital, and I'm not much for those beyond the singles.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not even sure how you can call Hospital "patchy"? As I recall, the only two listenable songs were Plant Man and Birds in Traffic. When I bought the album when it came out, I was excited as hell. It was going to prove once and for all that Gary Young was the true talent behind the band, etc, etc. I don't think I've listened to the album since.

The Plantman video is still as genius as I remember it though.

There's a couple other songs I remember liking besides those. Granted, a lot of it sounds like a deaf Jandek and I haven't listened to it in years. I guess I'm feeling charitable, so "patchy".

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

I stumbled upon some of Gary's more recent songs (apparently from 2004) on (what I assume to be) his myspace page.

the first track is a bit more shoegazey than the older stuff. I actually like it quite a bit. He seems to be embracing his prog roots. "hospital live" track is a cover (or completely dismantling) of Summer Babe. Um....

To be fair, perhaps a more realistic TS would be Gary Young versus Preston School of Industry.
I'd still have to say PSOI >>> Gary Young.

how about a battle of resident nutters?

Gary Young vs. David Baker

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Gary Young is responsible for some of the alltime greatest drumming on S&E. But he was intolerable live. He would run to the mic after every song babbling something stupid.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

See, I kind of like that

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:28 (eighteen years ago)
