The Music Rounds on "Mastermind", classic or dud?

No, I don't mean "University Challenge" where teams of students fail to recognise a Missy Elliot tune, and say "The Who!" whenever a rock group is played.

Mastermind:
Just lately, specialist rounds have featured The Jam, The Rolling Stones, and Ash. Generally I (and no doubt you) have scored (or would have) more than the contestant. Mind you, the Rolling Stones expert managed three points.

Oh, and to the Daily Mail types who reckon the prog is dumbing down, the dude whos subject was "Winston Churchill" managed two points.

Chairperson : "So, what fascinates you about Winston Churchill? Any idea?"

I was shitfaced last night and I got more of the Rolling Stones dude's questions right than he did.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

q: What Rolling Stones tune did the band license to Microsoft?

a) It's all over now
b) Not Fade Away
c) You can't always get what you want
d) Sympathy for the devil
e) The Last time
f) Miss You

(I can't actually remember which one he said. It wasn't "Start me up" anyway.)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

So did I and I don't care for the Stones. Put it down to nerves on his part I'd guess. I couldn't believe he didn't know the microsoft question, there was plenty of fuss about them 'selling out to the man' from long time fans at the time.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

I think he said "Miss You", but his bottle was totally gone by that stage.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

The prog is so NOT dumbing down! Amputechture out on the 12th...

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

I saw the Ash one, and that was ludicrous.

Mind you, last year (I think) someone did XTC and got thoroughly spanked with some incredibly tough questions.

Clumsy Colin in ACTION BIKER (coach_mcguirk), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have scored more than the Smiths dude and the Manics dude. If I ever go on Mastermind (unlikely, but I'd do better than some of the chumpers they've had on recently) I'm totally doing the life and career of Robbie Williams.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

(I mean, I read newspapers so would probably know most of it - it always seems to be geared towards the general fan rather than the rabid obsessive)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of the smiths questions boiled down to things like 'who is the drummer' and 'what is their american record label' = general knowledge, not specialist knowledge, yes.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

It was my friend who did XTC! He was in the lead after the specialist subject rounds, I think.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

i.e. he was not spanked cos he is hardcore.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Well not in the specialist rounds anyway. Presumably he got spanked on the general knowledge a bit, or he'd have won.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, he had a run of nasty questions in the General Knowledge and ended up finishing second by 1 point.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

I remember the Manics one - they weren't the most difficult either (I only got one less than the contestant, and she only got two or three wrong). Unsurprisingly, she then got flattened in the Gen Knowledge round....

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

The worst specialist subject ever was "The Harry Potter FILMS" - not even the fucking books, mind you. Taken when there had been 2 bloody films made. Hmmmm, 5 hours of video to research, that's some deep learning thar.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

No, I give you Myleene Klass on Celebrity Mastermind. Sex and the City Series 3. Not even the whole lot. Just one series.

(that Manics lassie spent all her time in the awkward chat with Humphrys where he pretends to be interested in your subject going on about how being into the Manics had introduced her to politics and literature and various intellectual pursuits she had never previously considered. She then proceeded to be a complete and utter twonk)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I remember roffling til I wept at Manics fan.

Celebrity Mastermind don't count, it's an oxymoron.

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

(haha Blunkett on Harry Potter = telly gold!)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

David Blunkett on the Harry Potter films?

That's presumably nackrd the "what colour was the chair" questions then!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

Re XTC dude on Mastermind :

He got spanked with the hard questions, but LOVED IT and triumphed! At least until the Gen Knowledge stuff.

Clumsy Colin in ACTION BIKER (coach_mcguirk), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Manics questions here

I got them all except 4,5 and 8. How sad am I?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

who's seen/ got the REM questions from monday night?
by all accounts it was pretty tough but he did okay.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and to the Daily Mail types who reckon the prog is dumbing down

I must be a Daily Mail type then. Is it right someone did an entire specialist round on the Olympics Games... of 1896? I've changed my mind about doing Krautrock 1968-78 as a specialist subject, better off just doing an individual band instead.

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I got 9 points, Q9 was a pure guess..

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

xpost again..

Your Specialist subject is: The album "Neu 2"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

... but only Side 2

Tad Sneery (Dada), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

I was Googling for the REM questions, but no joy. I thought they were pitched about right, difficulty-wise. I can only remember a few of the easier ones, so this won't be representative, but hey...

What was the name of their 1989 tour which supported environmental concerns?

What was the first single off Reveal?

Name the song on Monster that was inspired by the death of Kurt Cobain.

Which album contained "Shiny Happy People"?

To which establishment did the sign on the front of AFTP belong?

What cartoon show did the band appear in?

What TV show was "Stand" the theme tune to?

What label did the first EP come out on?

Name the cover version on Lifes Rich Pageant.

Well, that's 9 of them. He correctly answered 17 out of 17.

The contestant posts on this thread, before and after the recording of the show.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Where in London did the band play a free concert in 2001?

There was also a difficult "name that pseudonym" question - the answer wasn't Bingo Handjob, obviously.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

ah, just was going to say that!

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 17 September 2006 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
well there's only 1 i didnt know out of those so far (a tv show that had stand as its theme tune???) but was the last one something to do with 'hornets attack victor mature' ??

can't believe no one has the full questiopns list in the entire web!
