Due out Sept 25th UK/26th US on Vagrant, 35 min.

Does anyone anticipate this being any good? Or will it just recieve a lot of good will and a lot of poor sales and be forgotten like so many lesser clouds (They umm.. don't sell well either... bloody metaphors)
Garth Hudson and Mr. Mascis turn up on it apparently.

"No Backbone" is great. You can tell it's J Mascis on lead from the first note he plays.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

It's a shame about crack.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

Is this album floating about (accidentally wrote aboat, ha) then? Heard a review copy? I said fuck it when he was touring his solo thing. It sounded way too boring, this piques my interest though.
He's like a punky Gram Parsons but without the songs... or something. My head is sore, I hate moving.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Well, No Backbone is on myspace, and the mp3 was posted on AOL. It's a Smudge cover.

Some discussion here:
LEMONHEADS: Classic or Dud?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's a Smudge cover.

About half of the best Lemonheads songs are covers, so at least he's continuing the trend.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not satisified by No Backbone. Damns. The mix seems Lemonheadsy, with his voice in your ear and the rockin' pushed further back but it's also wrong, esp when his vocals are conveying little. Mleugh. Maybe I should wait til it's the actual song, not myspaced, not night and I can turn it up lots. Maybe I just want more mascis. The rhythm section certainly seems tight and clear, I understand it's the descendents lads.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

not myspaced

I thought that solo Evan Dando album (Baby I'm Bored) was cool. So this could very well be an all around good record.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 7 September 2006 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

so is this really the lemonheads of old (w/ juliana hatfield and whoever else) or just some artists that evan rounded up to re-market as the lemonheads?...wait, why am i even asking about this like i care...i fucking hate the lemonheads...sorry, nevermind.

robert anderson (venimdenim), Thursday, 7 September 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Then why'd you hit submit? You're getting an answer whether you like it or not!

The latter, at least on this track: Evan Dando, Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson with guest J Mascis.
"Some artists that Evan rounded up to re-market as the Lemonheads" has been the case since "Lovey". Juliana Hatfield was just the bassist on It's A Shame About Ray". The "real" Lemonheads would have to include (original co-singer/songwriter) Ben Deily in some way, which seems to be in the "never gonna happen" category, and also Jesse Peretz on bass. The drummer was always a revolving door type thing, I think Doug Trachten was the name of the first one.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

(My bad, Jesse Peretz was still in the band for Lovey)

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hahahaha, I give you the "real" Lemonheads:

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 7 September 2006 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

Add longer hair, and he'd look no different!

Deily did mention on his website getting together with Dando recently:

As some of you may know, Evan and I spent my birthday last year crooning and strumming the night away, and the damndest thing was that it sounded as if we'd never stopped playing together. To my incredulous amazement, we both remembered all the chords, and the words. It was fun and sweet and effortless in a way I can't adequately describe.

But no mention of a full-on reunion in the works. Seems like the most exciting thing either of them could do at this point, and there'd be no implication of "sell-out" since the Taang!-era original line-up was not the alterna-hit version of the band.

There's a performance/interview where he talks about a bunch of stuff.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Peretz = full-time director type now, right? (His name's biggest round of exposure may still be the credit on a Nada Surf video.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Evan's starting to look a bit Michael Gira:

That Foo Fighters stuff's a pretty big deal. Learn to Fly! That original It's A Shame About Ray video with Johnny Depp in it was pretty cool, also the first Lemonheads thing I ever saw. I think I still have the Dave Kendell era 120 Minutes with Evan on as guest that introduced me to the band on tape somewhere.
