BRIGHT SIDE BRIGHT SIDE BRIGHT SIDE: maybe the next Vladislav album will be amazing?

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 7 September 2006 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

I though it was a big let down at first but after sticking with it, and attempting to let go of any expectations for what a Luomo record should be and sound like, I'd say it's only a step down from the past two records.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 September 2006 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds about right.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 September 2006 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know-- only two-three tracks are any good at all, IMHO. And "The Tease Is Over" is possibly the worst Luomo track I've ever heard.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

I actually don't mind The Tease Is Over anymore, even if it explictly is saying, "ok, this is the pseudo-torch song on the album." The first and last tracks are better candidates for worst tracks: who wants to hear Luomo without vocals or at least intelligable vocal snippets?

Anyway, take some time with this record, it's been three years since the last one and from the looks of it, will be a long time until the next one.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

The vocal samples in Luomo have always been amazing, and the types of sounds used are fantastic. On top of that the actual songwriting is on a level that few artists can compete with. Sasu Ripatti is in his own category.

As far as this album, Mr. Ripatti has done much more interesting versions of all these tracks. There are no new ideas presented, aside from the, sorry MFG, terrible Luomo-triphop presented in The Tease is Over.

Although, on second and third listen, this album isn't as bad as I initially suspected. In fact, I actually like a few tracks.

The moral: THANK GOD FOR UUSITALO.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 7 September 2006 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

thank god for records that already came out in 2000 and 2003

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 7 September 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

thank god for other lush musics i am listening to.

oh lfam, today i went on a walk with ami and i found the geocache in the woods and they replaced the fucking logbook! we are no longer immortalized in the geocaching world.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

time for some more freemasonry

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 7 September 2006 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

oh and i looked up my zip code on the geocaching website but do you know that you have to log in to get the coordinates? i don't wanna fucking log in! i don't even have a gps and i don't think my compass skills are up to snuff anyways

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

"The Tease Is Over" is possibly the worst Luomo track I've ever heard.

i think this is one of the best things on the record. "wanna Tell" is the worst thing on it.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 7 September 2006 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Jed, we must agree to disagree about "The Tease.." But "Wanna Tell" is not as good as I would want, either.

(that is stupid about the site, lfam. log-in? my ass.) (that sounds weird said out loud no matter how i type it)

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 8 September 2006 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

also, lfam-- apparently more freemasonry materials are coming in towards mid-october? fall break fap & freemasonry, if the mood is right?

"Really Don't Mind" radio edit is an almost perfect weirdo r&b track. Argh.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 9 September 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, the crying baby promo is surreal!

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 10 September 2006 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda love that it took this long for someone to mention the damn babies. haha.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 11 September 2006 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

we were talking about the album sans baby

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 11 September 2006 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, we've been talking about the baby-less version. much bitching about the baby went on on the 'explain the appeal of luomo' thread.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 11 September 2006 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, i dont' quite catch every thread on ilm. and yes we were talking about the album, but still ... like i said, i actually think it's great that it took that long for the baby to come up in this thread. haha.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

listened to this again today, and i would like to add 'cowgirls' to the list of tracks that are 'all right.'

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

well i remember that being the first song that i wtf-ed at when i first skipped through it but since i deleted it don't remember. isn't it crappy or something?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 18 September 2006 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's not crappy, it's just very easy listening - like Luomo going coffee table for real (rather than The Present Lover's superficial appearance of coffee-table-ness).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 September 2006 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's just very innocuous and not too sexy. The ending of that particular track is also kind of off. But the rest of it is sort of nice, in the way that Tim said.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 18 September 2006 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

i thought the present lover was very coffee table in its lyricsbut not in its music. i liked that.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 18 September 2006 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

The secret is you all like coffee tables.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 September 2006 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

they have their uses.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 18 September 2006 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

I like coffee table books, too. Who wouldn't want a shitload of Phaidon art books lying around? Unfortunately, such luxuries are out of my reach. So instead, I will continue to bitch about this album's blandness...

also, xxxpost: the lyrics on TPL are sort of coffee table, but a bit more discreet than the lyrics on PT.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 18 September 2006 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

really though, vocalcity was so aloof and pessimistic but the present lover is sort of goofy. a lot of it sounded like something my old haitian french teacher mona michel used to say when talking about how great deepak chopra is.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 18 September 2006 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

and let me tell you, i was never as amiable towards him as when she was rhapsodizing

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 18 September 2006 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

i agree somewhat, but i think that there are one or two tracks on TPL that have some dark dark lyrics. 'So You'? i mean, fucking depressing, really. good thing the tracks moves fast enough that it's hard to notice without many listens.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 18 September 2006 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

also, i would love to hear a haitian rhapsodize about deepak chopra.

trees (treesessplode), Monday, 18 September 2006 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
"good to be with" is nice. and "let you know" is kind of cool, i like the skeletal schaffel. but yes overall a comedown. (reminds me trajectory-wise of tricky's 3rd full-length.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Sherburne dropped the ball: Paper Tigers gets an 8.2? yeah. uh huh.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually coming around to the album - it's emerging from the shadow of The Present Lover a bit for me.

Nonetheless I get the impression that Phillip likes Paper Tigers more than me to the exact extent that I like The Present Lover more than him - I would be much more favourable to this album if its predecessor wasn't so U&K.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

Captain Save-a-Luomo.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

pitchfork payback for leaking the entire album. not that i doubt philips love for it.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Joanna Newson - Ys
Payback: 11.3

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

what does U&K mean? but i think you may be right, tim.
jed, was luomo the record that got leaked? i didn't know!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 4 November 2006 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

Urgent and Key

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 4 November 2006 06:50 (eighteen years ago)

This is a nice coffee table. I will listen to this record when I don't want to listen to a record. Come on... we all need records like that.
