I get Napster for free through my school but the downloads can only be played for a year from the date downloaded and can't be burned onto discs so that I can save them. How do I burn this copy protected music onto a blank disc?

is it really necessary to make fun of me for my damn email address? I made it when i was younger and I've simply never bothered to change it. Additionally, I don't see why having a playful email address which expresses an interest in comics warrants such hostility. I don't know too much about computers but I love music and i was just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me with my problem.

so, you're making fun of me for being a student? I don't understand why instead of helping me or simply passing, you're taking the time and energy to belittle and insult me. Besides, you don't actually know me. You don't know if I am infact a "valley-girl" as you are making me out to be. You don't even know my age. I am old enough however, to be more mature than to go out of my way to put someone down and attempt to make him/her feel bad on an online tutorial where people are supposed to help one another.

You could try
a) plugging your computer's audio output to the line in of another computer to record the audio
b) use one of those programs that record the audio the computer is experiencing
c) plugging your computer's audio output to a HiMD minidisc player (or some other device) then transfer it back to the PC

However these are slow in that you actually have to listen to those songs. You might find your own taste in music really scary.

Thanks to those of you who actually offered help. I really appreciate it. Believe me, I have paid for more than my fair share of music and it's not like i'm going to sell what i burn and make a profit. It's simply to expand my library without having to pay thousands of dollars for cds. Additionally, I can garauntee the tuition for my school more than covers these downloads.

SaraK (SaraK), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I'm on any high horses of pedestals about music piracy, Sara, but the word "more" is not, in and of itself, quite powerful enough to obliterate markets:

I have paid for more than my fair share of music: I'm guessing you've paid market price for exactly as much music as you own, and probably much less, what with the burning and all -- you certainly haven't paid more, unless you make charity donations to the RIAA.

I can garauntee the tuition for my school more than covers these downloads: The tuition for your school covers, like, tuition for your school. You can't really be all like "they owe me chips, too."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Not that it matters. I wish I had technical advice for you, but I am having a crotchety old man moment where I'm all like "why, back in my day we had to use cassettes to tape things off of radios! The best we had was tape decks that said 'High-Speed Dubbing' on them, and let me tell you, they didn't just automatically play Lee Perry in double-time!(*)"

(*) Unless you were dubbing a Lee Perry tape, obviously.

My advice, go to the public library, find some things you like, rip 'em.

fuck this (no such thing as a) free Napster BS.

just say no to individuality (fandango), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think there's this idea floating around that just because people are no longer very attached to owning a physical music product, it'll be possible to wean them away from having any lasting ownership of files, either. I dunno, maybe there are (or will be) people who are totally comfortable with more or less leasing their music collections -- there are plenty of people for whom this stuff is impermanent anyway, music to be boxed up and lost and then repurchased in middle age from Time/Life -- but I can't quite follow it; I haven't ever bothered with any music whose license will eventually expire on me.

The weird part is that I feel that way mostly because plenty of my digital music is impermanent, getting lost and trashed fairly soon after download -- for some reason it annoys me to think I'd have to keep a subscription current to keep a few records I liked when most of the files I got from said service could happily disappear!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

The fact that there are things un-findable even on 5l5k (and other services, whose collections of released music undoubtedly surpass ANY legal service in breadth) make me suspect "leasing" is doomed from the word go for real enthusiasts.

And good luck getting 12 CD man/woman to keep an active subscription (unless it somehow ends up being just an added tax upon internet access itself in the copyright apocalypse).

just say no to individuality (fandango), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but the thing is, she gets to "lease" it for free--schoolio throws it in hoping to deter the young 'uns from th'other methods. It's less ownership than an on-demand custom radio service, or something. But it's not enough--she wants them to just give her free shit.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Friday, 8 September 2006 03:44 (eighteen years ago)

P.S. These days the institutions for higher learning are more about raking in the dough than actually focusing on the education of the students. Obviously the education has improved and usually the more one pays the better of an education they shall receive because of resources available and teacher salaries. Nevertheless students and their families are having to pay significantly more each year for college education which is necessary for the majority of well-paying jobs out there. Basically it's becoming even harder for an even greater percentage of people not so well-off finacially to obtain well-paying positions in desired career fields. It's no secret that everything is overpriced and colleges is no exception. Tuition and room and board are increasing drastically each year and textbooks and various supplies necessary for certain courses are outrageously priced. Additionally there's the extra cost of food and various fees are collected daily for one thing or a nother such as access to certain facilities that really should be included. Going to college is simply a required event people must go to to have their families money drained. Honestly, when you experience it first hand you see how much additional money is continuously required on a daily basis to receive a top notch education and understand why one may wonder what the tuition pays for. The schools and other institutions backing them are clearly making unreasonable profits and when you compare the excess thousands drained from students' bill payers, then you will understand why my request is not unreasonable and why I am in fact owed the free music.

u disagree i take it? Also, for anyone wondering why my school has such a deal with napster or doubting the existence of the deal it has to do with what i was talking about. MONEY. the school and napster work together and mutually benefit. The school gets paid by napster to essentially act as a medium for interactive advertising. Napster's gain is hooking thousands of customers.

Obviously there are people out there who know more about computers and how to bypass my little problem since sites like limewire exist.
