Last year I missed both Amadou & Miriam and Konono No. 1 because I heard about both after the fest. This year, I implore the collective wisdom of ILM to point me in the right direction before it happens:
List of artists here

thanks in advance.

john, a resident of chicago. (john s), Friday, 8 September 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I didn't know about this! I wanna know too!

Ivan Gallardo (Ivan), Friday, 8 September 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

I've read several folks on ILX praise Dengue Fever's Cambodian garage pop, but I haven't heard it yet myself.

Just saw Oliver Mtukudzi and band. Not bad, sometimes too laid-back and I prefer fellow Zimbabwean Thomas Mapfumo more, but he's got a good band and some of his cuts groove nicely (women backup singers give some songs a South African like feel).

Rob Curto's Forro for All are a fun NY-based Brazilian outfit that specializes in that rural style (forro) using accordian and more.

Lots of other acts look promising from the links

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

That looks really cool. My band is playing with Sl4vic S0ul Party next week, I'll let you know if they're really good.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit, I'd list it like this
1. Cibelle
2. Mamadou Diabate
3. Orchestra Infinity
4. Curumin
5. Kultur Shock
6. Teddy Afro
7. Slavic Soul Party
8. Jesus Enriquez

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Matt, High Noon on Monday.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Matt,
are you going to this?
tell me why i should go.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

(I mean, I don't think it'll take that much convincing, I'm just interested in hearing about these artists)

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Mattkunym:

I think you'd like Forro for All. It's funky Brazilian polka zydeco...sorta

I bet the Occidental Brothers will be good also. West African guitar grooves...

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Dengue Fever is pretty cool, although I think the garage-rock bit is overstated. A lot of it just sounds like contemporary south Asian pop music.

DJ Striz (Chicago/USA)
One of the windy city's most versatile DJs, Striz has developed a reputation for his unique blend of downtempo, hip-hop, broken beat, and house.

? I went to college with this guy. He's a white kid from the Midwest. Dunno what he's doing at this festival.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I would imagine that lots of musicians playing at this festival are white kids from the midwest.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

deej: I have a family (and a soccer team of 11-year-old girls to coach) so it is unlikely that I will go. As far as the artists: Cibelle has done my favorite (or second-favorite) album of the year, spooky funny electronic folk music; Curumin's album of last year was on Quannum so there's a little hip-hop connection for you, he's funky as hell; Mamadou Diabate is a trailblazer who is trying very hard to expand the possibilities of the African/European synthesis; Kahil El'Zabar (leader of Orchestra Infinity) is the greatest drummer in the U.S. and a very wild jazz guy. That's for starters.

Jordan I'll try to go to that show but you know me and shows.

Steve I love forró, don't know how I missed that. But the name throws me a little bit. Also yeah Occidental Bros. sounds great.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh I know Kahil El'Zabar, I didn't notice his name up there. Yeah i'll check this out.

PS: bring the soccer team

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I would imagine that lots of musicians playing at this festival are white kids from the midwest.

I thought it was a World Music Festival. I don't follow.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

John I think the point is that a lot of "world music" acts are w.k.f.t.m. My favorite afrobeat record of 2006 is from Iowa.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Like, my band plays New Orleans music, sometimes at New Orleans festivals, yet we are not from New Orleans.

Does it matter if the Chicago Afr0beat Orchestra is made up of white people from Chicago or black people from Chicago or black people from Africa or all of the above?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

I think jaymc's just mad Canasta was not asked to participate

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, no.

Yeah, I mean, I know about bands like Nomo (Afrobeat from Michigan) -- but just glancing at the lineup for this, it seems like the vast majority of the performers are either international or ethnic Americans.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, I don't care where the performers are from, Jordan -- I just didn't understand your comment about "lots of musicians at this festival are white kids from the Midwest" when the schedule seems to indicate otherwise.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

JOKES jaymc.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I know, I just ... am distancing myself.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

A BREAKTHROUGH!

Dr. Phil McGraw (Haikunym), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

philmeup@buttercup.net
lol

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think the important part for the festival is that the styles of music are primarily from other countries, rather than performers.

xpost, but seriously, I can guarantee you that a fair number of musicians in those bands are wkftm (at least the American ones like SSP, CAB, Fareed Haque, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

What the fuck is "wkftm"? Is it like "koritfw"?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, "white kids from the Midwest." I said that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Coffee, jaymc, coffee.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Gave it up three years ago! I miss it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, let me backtrack then. None of the times I have seen DJ Striz (aka B3n Str0h) spin has he played anything that would be considered "world music." Granted, I haven't seen him in several years, so maybe dude has a new act.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

He's been around the world romancing girls that dance with girls.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Some girls dance with women / They know that it gets them attention / I wanna get in with them / So pass me a drink and let's roll.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I like the Dengue Fever I've heard. Actually not familiar with too many of the others.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

"Extra Golden is an international collaboration between members of two bands: Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari of the Nairobi, Kenya-based benga band, Orchestra Extra Solar Africa, and Ian Eagleson and Alex Minoff of the Washington D.C.-based rock band, Golden. Ian’s doctoral research on Kenyan music brought the musicians together. Since 2000, Otieno had been assisting Ian in documenting benga, a guitar-heavy type of dance music (similar to Congolese rumba) that has been popular in Kenya since the 1960s"

white kids collaborating with Africans from Kenya(together in perfect harmony as Stevie W would say). Actually I read about these folks in a nice Christopher Porter article in the Washington City Paper...

Oh Matt, Rob Curto's Forro for All usually just play NYC, but they came down to DC once where I saw them. Not sure they even have a cd out.

Jody Rosen was just writing about Serbian Gypsy band Kal who are gonna be in Chicago (Jody was covering several Gypsy and hybrid Balkan type bands), in online mag Slate

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I read that, I'm a little burned out on gypsy bands right now though; much more into czech and slovak bands who incorporate that sound as part of their whole steez instead of ostentatiously making it The Big Focal Point. i'm probably wrong though.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 September 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

starts thursday. just a bump for any other suggestions.

mamadou diabate, curumin, cibelle and slavic soul party are all playing for free at various times, so i'm going to try to catch them. thanks, matt.

john, a resident of chicago. (john s), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I had a lot of fun w/SSP last night, they're great.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen Rodrigo Y Gabriela. HUGELY enjoyable. Just watch them fingers fly! If you like cheery noisy participative vibes, then this is a must.

Yat-Kha from Tuva could be great. Not too sure about those recent covers, but the previous album was intriguing and different.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

so far i've gotten to see:
Sara Tavares - alternatingly very breezy and groovy. very fun mini set for at least 100-120 people at borders.
Otto - the all percussion abbreviated version of "girl from ipanema" was quite cool. most of the songs seemed cut short to do more an interview as it was being broadcast by wnur, but i'd like to hear his full band recordings.

tonight my wife and i are going to try to see the whirling dervishes, whom we couldn't even get close to at the cultural center last night. we were among the couple hundred they turned away.

i gotta say this festival is probably one of the coolest things the city has going. i'm basically spending every lunch next week seeing something for free. tomorrow and sunday are just packed with free stuff all day. the only problem is logistics -- getting from uptown to hyde park or garfield park to downtown to navy pier.

john, a resident of chicago. (john s), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Rodrigo Y Gabriela. HUGELY enjoyable. Just watch them fingers fly!

OTM. these two were fantastic. unfortunate that the local previews of them focused entirely on the fact they are now on dave matthews' label and cover "stairway to heaven" on the soon to be released album. the originals they played were amazing and gabriela had to be the best female guitarist i've ever seen.

yesterday's daley plaza culture music club of zanzibar show was great, too.

unfortunate that the previews tried to get more people to see them?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

oh, no. unfortunate, cuz they referenced it was either disparagingly
(from one preview: There’s no good reason for anybody to ever cover “Stairway to Heaven” again) or as just some sort of schtick. i walked in prepared to be completely underwhelmed.

john, a resident of chicago. (john s), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

John, I'm really pleased you enjoyed them. :-)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for the tip, mike! i probably would have skipped them had you not mentioned 'em.

luckily it's my last week at work, so i'm able to take looong lunches. tomorrow: kal, aurelio martinez and curumin.
