Virgin Festival Lineup Change/ BSS does not equal Massive Attack

I'm just venting because I learned Massive Attack will not be headlining the Toronto edition of the Virgin Festival because of Visa issues. Instead, the promoters are still providing "outstanding talent" by replacing Massive Attack with Broken Social Scene.
Broken Social Scene is in no way an adequate replacement for Massive Attack.
(Of course, they are offering a refund if you can get to a Ticketmaster outlet within the next day, and front-of-the-line status, with ticket, for the rescheduled Massive Attack show, but I'm still disappointed. I spent $240 on tickets with the expectation that Massive Attack would be closing things out.
(For Massive Attack fans, they've also cancelled their Montreal, Detroit and Chicago shows).

Broken Social Scene are 10 x the power of infinity better than Massive Attack in 2006, deal with it.

OTM Marcello. What have Massive Attack contributed to music (that is good) in the last... oooh... 10 years?

Mezzanine duh

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 8 September 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

Look, the dude just wants to see Massive Attack, you know?

If it's to do with visa problems then he should lodge a formal complaint with the British Embassy in Toronto and try and get his money back instead of slagging off other groups.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

Mezzanine was a snooze. Actually, everything they did was a snooze. Except Unfinished Sympathy which was just depressing and scarey because of that "HEEYYY HEEYYY HEEYYY" that reminds me of a hare being trapped in an empty swimming pool.

i think they're a bit overrated (or were anyway) but nonetheless:

haha, you know i'm joking. I've been known to enjoy a couple of tracks off of Protection.

At least Massive Attack don't go for swanning about in detective trenchcoats and big sunglasses and generally play-acting thirties classiness.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know Broken Social Scene did that...?

Canadians will destroy the planet.

I'd say Mezzanine was my fave of the lot. And for years Blue Line was one of my very favourite albums, so i REALLY like Mezzanine.

I MEANT, in comparison with Justin "Justin" Timberlake (multiple xpost).

Massive Attack are BORING live.

I suspect "Toronto edition" might have something to do with the (local?) antipathy here. I'd kind of dismissed BSS (heard some songs and... meh) but caught a bit of them live on TV the other day and was just blown away at what they were doing... from further listening I don't feel their songs stand up very much but I would RUN to hear them live.

I definitely need to see BSS live. Frustratingly, the day Lena had to fly back to Toronto was the same day they were playing the Oxford Zodiac grrr!

I'd like them to play at our wedding but since (a) they'd have to fly in from Toronto and (b) there are a lot of them it would probably be super-expensive...

This is god and/or the Virgin Festival promoters trying to do you a favor.

Broken Social Scene are 10 x the power of infinity better than Massive Attack in 2006, deal with it.

Saw both at Lowlands, this statement is wrong to the power of infinity. The ten minutes of Liz Fraser was worth BSS.

Also ... TWO DRUMMERS! MARK OF GENIUS!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Marcello, as much as you like BSS (and I didn't "slag off" the band, I just said they weren't the equal of Massive Attack or an adequate replacement. I have a hunch time might bear me out), I paid to see Massive Attack play their first Canadian date in eight years.
Disappointment, I think, is a natural response. As for BSS, since every third Canadian is a member of the band, they just don't have the same cachet up here. I think I played on their third album.
All that being said, I'm still going to the damn festival. I'll let you know how BSS sounded.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really like Massive Attack, but If I had wanted to see them I'd be pissed, primarily because you can see broken social scene any time you want in Toronto, maybe if they got another big act that rarely comes to Canada, that would be something, but it just rubs in the fact that massive attack couldn't come.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Saturday, 9 September 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Actually since both the Saturday and Sunday headliners had the plugs pulled midway through their sets because of the noise bylaw, it was kind of a blessing Massive Attack had to reschedule.
