If anyone says this is a dud, I'll eat my hat

One Man's Mede Is Another Man's Persian (Dada), Friday, 8 September 2006 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

don't know it, does it compare to "now be thankful" by fairport, that's a favorite of mine...

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 8 September 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's as good as "Now Be Thankful", i.e. very very very very good

One Man's Mede Is Another Man's Persian (Dada), Friday, 8 September 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

Vanity record? Do tell...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 8 September 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I wanna hear the vanity record story too. I can remember my joy upon finding numerous still-sealed copies of this LP in a thrift store once; bought 'em all to give to friends. Pretty solid record all the way through, but man, I NEVER get tired of that groove on the title cut.

Gangsta whitewalls, tv antenna in the back...

Rodney doesn't dance, he boogies. (R. J. Greene), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

um yes clearly this is awesome.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

The re-recorded version of "Be Thankful" (done sometimes in the late 70s/early 80s I think) that sometimes shows up (in lieu of the original) on Devaughan CDs/comps these days is a big dud.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, I actually just downloaded this the other day. Really love it.

Embarrassingly enough, I think I first heard the Yo La Tengo cover version.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm positive I heard the Massive Attack version before I heard the original.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

I think heard the Arthur Lee version before I heard the original!

He remade the track again in the early 80s, and it was hot as hell in a whole different way.

From answer.com:

The Washington, D.C. native was working for the government when he paid $900 for a recording session at Philadelphia's Omega Sound Inc. (basically a "vanity record" operation). Usually the results of such efforts are anything but star-making, but Omega featured the services of MFSB's main rhythm section (guitarist Norman Harris, drummer Earl Young, bassist Ron Baker, and vibist Vince Montana). Omega vice-president Frank Fioravanti was impressed with the record and began shopping it around to various labels.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

that's awesome

There is nothing wrong with the discofied 1980 version.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Friday, 8 September 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

Embarrassingly enough, I think I first heard the Yo La Tengo cover version.

i first heard the (really really really smokin') lee-perry produced discomix 12" (i forget the vocalist) of this before the original.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 8 September 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I didn't know that was Earl Young. He pwns on that.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 9 September 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

ah yes the reggae version (well the one i know, i'm sure there are others) is sung by bunny clarke

good read btw: http://www.kalamu.com/bol/2006/02/12/171/

I heard the Eazy-E sample before I heard the original!

but fucking Yo La Tengo and especially *Massive Attack* ... uh, thank god, no. (I acutally really like 'Blue Lines' the album .. but when I finally heard it ... that fucking cover version, horrendous.)

Great fucking track, as is the first album. but yeah, his 1980 album is disappointing. Really like the entirety of the first one actually.. "Give The Little Man A Great Big Hand" another nice Curtis-styled track

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 9 September 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

that's a very suggestive title

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 9 September 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

i'd like to think that William was sort of dutifully carrying on Curtis's sentimentality

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 9 September 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

(of course, AM, I know you were joking, my friend)

(going to the T&G thingy ? like to meet ya)(and talk Dylan - ha!)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 9 September 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha I like the Massive Attack version! dubwise, sleepy and stoned-sounding. alternately, or ahem alternatively I've been living a fairly happy & fulfilled life w/o knowing that Yo La Fucking We Don't Believe In Vocal Projection Tengo would bother to cover it.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 9 September 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

T&G?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 9 September 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)
