Another Chemikal Underground band going under.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

Kind of symbolic for me, this is; the last gig Laura and I saw was Arab Strap at the Zodiac in Oxford, and together with Pulp they were pretty much our favourite band in later years.

Malcolm's last solo album Into The Woods was one of last year's least heralded great records, and Aidan's Lucky Pierre stuff is wonderful as well.

The live album Mad For Sadness was our favourite record of theirs (and we were in the audience); highlight being "The Girls Of Summer" - phenomenal.

RIP youse guys.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

That is one terrible name for a compilation. Kinda sad they're jacking it in but it sounds like they're doing it for the right reasons

oh saaad day!

i saw their show at the Get Off My Pavement fest in glasgow about a month ago. they seemed, well, fine! this is too bad but i guess maybe for the best. it'll be interesting to see what Aidan does next.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

gets pished, probly.

stet (stet), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

pff. Monday at the hug and pint was like the last relevant album from the old Chemikal underground - gang. Thought Into the Woods was better than Last Romance though.

barnaby69 (barnaby68), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

What would Arab Strap have been if they didnae get pished?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

The Proclaimers?

They're from Falkirk, there's nae way they'd no get pished.

treefell (treefell), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

I love most of those Arab Strap records (have yet to hear the last couple, Monday... or Last Romance). Not much like them exists in the world. Mad for Sadness is probably my favorite as well, it sounds like a cathartic audience experience. It was a solid run.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

The live album Mad For Sadness was our favourite record of theirs (and we were in the audience); highlight being "The Girls Of Summer" - phenomenal.

RIP youse guys.

-- Marcello Carlin

Also my favorite album. Great that you were there. Was the climax of "New Birds" (my favorite track) as loud as it sounds?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Awh the version of New Birds from Mad For Sadness is great yeah... my ex-girlfriend put it on a mix tape for me about 6 years ago, it was the first thing I'd heard by them, I remember she was playing it in her car one time and I asked what it was.

Then she decided she preferred girls :'( I wonder if Arab Strap ever wrote a song about that, they probably did. I never kept up with them after that, I just have Philophobia and Mad For Sadness.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

One of my favorite Scottish bands (which is saying a lot).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Louder! (Mark xpost)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

Although the last couple albums were a bit pish, Philophobia is probably one of the best 'second albums' of the past decade..

If I could pick only one record though, it would have to be the Cherubs EP, "Pulled" is one the most intense 5 minutes you're ever likely to hear...

RIP Arab Strap..

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is way to twee and british for me to understand.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

My friend once found Aidan blind drunk sitting on the steps up to his flat, he had to shoo him away. There's thousands of stories like that about the man. Bit of a legend. Not as keen on Malcolm's solo stuff but I do like Lucky Pierre so it's not all bad news.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Not a fan of that live album or the live show that I caught (Bottom Of The Hill circa Philophobia), but I really liked their singles.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 8 September 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ten years since "First Big Weekend" and The Week Never Starts Round Here! : soundtrack to a great time in my life and, as such I suppose, still my favourite Arab Strap releases.

Middleston's Into The Woods album was also a good 'un.

DavidM* (unreal), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

:-(

i went to their website only yesterday - one of my friend's birthdays is on the night that the live album was recorded, and i always end up checking the discography because it's never in my diary. i saw them at the union chapel on the philophobia tour and they were phenomenal, and their gig at the garage a few months ago was pretty great, too, as a number of ilxors can attest.

never listened to into the woods, but malcolm's first solo album was a highlight of 2002 for me.

now keeping ym fingers crossed that their farewell dates aren't during the couple of weeks i'm away in oct/nov...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

they sucked. good riddance.

a.b. (alanbanana), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

i wish they'd done this before the last romance so they wouldn't have that stain on their otherwise good record

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

the last romance IS an otherwise good record!

antexit (antexit), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

how can a good record spoil a good record?

antexit (antexit), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

i'm a big fan of 'the girls of summer e.p'

and mcd otm: they seemed like one of a kind

whatever (boglogger), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

they sucked. good riddance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 8 September 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

I now have a ticket to go to what was meant to be their last ever show in Glasgow, in December. Except the rumours are that they are adding another night after that, so the smart people who got their tickets early aren't going to the last show at all :-/

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 11 September 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

If they'd pressed more of that "First Big Weekend" single, they could have had an "O Superman" sized hit.

Remember that beer advert where they got a more comprehensible scot to do the voiceover?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 September 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Rave reviews on the radio from both Ian Dury and Billy Connolly!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 11 September 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

about time, really, though, innit? i mean, they hit an artistic peak with "the red thread" and everything since then has kinda been treading water ... to be honest, i had to check there to see if i actually *have* the last album. i do, and i don't remember a fucking thing about it.

the last malcolm middleton album is, as MC says upthread, a thing of joy and wonder. although they're both interesting and talented (piss) artists, and i look forward to seeing what each of them comes up with next, it'll be malcolm's career i follow with far more interest.

they're one of those bands i associate with a very particular time and place in my life (namely glasgow in the late 1990s) and i think that's maybe why i don't listen to them much today ... i mean, i played "philophobia" to death at the time and i'm not sure i ever want to hear it again. it all struck a bit too much of a chord. i'm not even sure i'll bother with the farewell gigs ... for some reason i'm happier keeping them in my past. hmm.

hey ho. to new beginnings, and all that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 11 September 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

I never really understood the love for "Mad For Sadness", in part because I think (like grimly fiendish) that they didn't peak until around "The Red Thread".

"The Last Romance" was a perfectly fine album, but whatever reason I can't forge a strong connection with it (it's much the same with "Elephant Shoe"). There are only so many stories about getting sloshed and banging some chick that I truly need to hear from any one band. Also, Arab Strap are far better when they sulk than when they rock.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 September 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

it's kinda nice that they leave at their more optimistic... what with the end track of the last romance, they sound even happy!

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

is there a full list of tour dates anywhere, then? don't see anything on their website...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.nme.com/news/arab-strap/24250

Bollocks, they've added a second night in Glasgow, meaning I'm going to the penultimate gig. Oh well.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

In typical form, they have booked a venue in Bristol which has closed down.

I'm gutted, they're possibly my favourite band. Loved them since buying the first single (in Sleeves in Kirkcaldy, trivia hunters). I am on 'The Cunted Circus', the guy that Aidan sings 'Especially For You' for.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

'Hey! Fever' was their best track, despite its unnaturally cheerful disposition. Up there with JJ&FP's 'Summertime' in sounding hott with the topp down.

Huey in Melbourne (Huey in Melbourne), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

We all know you're soft 'casue we've all seen you dancing /
We all know you're hard 'cause we've all seen you drinking, from noon until noon again

(I'm bummed, I thought they were one of the more unique and interesting groups around. To a suburban American, those stories of Scottish nightlife sounded downright alien).

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Are those lyrics from khaya?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

(they're from the Belle and Sebastian tribute song to Aidan Moffitt, "The Boy with the Arab Strap")

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, I knew I recognised them. I always forget that there are a couple of B&S songs I like really quite a lot... Still Dan from khaya might be flattered, especially given that when they started out the two bands people compared them to were Arab Strap and B&S. I could see the first, but not the second, perhaps because Edinburgh's nearer to Falkirk than to Glasgow?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

In typical form, they have booked a venue in Bristol which has closed down.

It'll be open again by then, don't fret

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

I always suspected it would.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

My friend once got Aidan to sign his album. He duly obliged, writing, "All the best, Moffchops"

Another favourite Aidan moment was after last year's Electric Magnolia Co gig at Mono - whilst enjoying a post gig slash Aidan let forth a thundering great fart and, grinning with great satifaction, exclaimed, "EXCUSE ME GENTS!"

What a legend!

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
The Thekla looks smaller than ever, as the Heavenly people have extended the bar. It's not what people might call "intimate", but I suppose that's what we want - this is supposed to be saying goodbye to good friends, after all, and Ver Strap have recognised this as it's on every shirt they're selling. Goodbye.

The intro to Loch Leven ushers the band in, followed by a recorded rant by a Falkirk councillor (presumably from a news interview) denouncing them as talentless. Aidan tells us that this is the end, and we get some ridiculously early material like 'Gilded'. They have clearly BROUGHT THE ROCK, and 'Speed-Date' threatens to turn into the Rother-era Kraftwerk with Aidan building a dense motorik beat out of a synthdrum set up next to the kit. 'New Birds' is thrown in amazingly early and is completely vicious, probably the best I've heard it until... the noisy bit at the end is... different. There's almost a jaunty beat under it, and none of the menace. Worse yet, Malcolm breaks a string and there's a long pause while his guitar gets fixed. We get an acoustic version of 'Serenade' and then Aidan tells his Kylie Minogue joke to fill the space.

Then it all starts going wrong. It just seems all a bit perfunctory for the next bit, with some choices I can't understand. Does anybody actually like 'There Is No Ending'? And I can't stand 'Loch Leven', one of the worst pieces of umpty-tum in their repertoire.

Then 'The First Big Weekend' comes out of nowhere. And it's blinding. You remember exactly why you love this band, exactly what they've meant to you, and exactly why they were your favourite band. You remember what you were doing the first time you heard this song, and where you bought it. You remember that time Aidan got back with that girl and the whole set was an astonishingly bitter rant about her because he'd just found out she was shagging around behind his back again. You remember organising a work trip specifically to see them at the other end of the country. You remember how frustrating it was a couple of years ago, when they seemed not to care any more. You remember "it's officially summer".

The encores are a bit flat after that, culminating with an acoustic version of 'The Shy Retirer' that seems to sum up their career. "If we ever make it home, I'll tell you all the things that shaped me thus." And then the pigs chuck us out.

When I tried to do my coat up in the cold outside, there was a button missing. It must have fallen off during the gig.

I lost a button off my duffelcoat watching Arab Strap for the final time.

TWEE-EST EPITAPH EVER.

Going to Manchester too.

Boy, still love Mad for Sadness. Not sure I can think of another band where my favorite album by them is the live one.

Something from that came up on shuffle the other day and I wondered yet again why I don't play them more often.

Okay, I saw this in the shop and was unable to resist buying it; it's the coolest thing ever:

A new single by Aidan Moffat, about 20 seconds long, released in one format: Beer bottle opener.

When you open a beer, it sings: "Beer you are my enemy, beer you are my friend / my mind was yours to cloud, and so my heart is yours to mend."

All these teenagers wearing lingerie and experimenting with homosexuality and using vibrating rabbit ears and sticking foreign objects up their arses and dressing up – it’s not right.

Bye bye pop music, then.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

i'd love to know what charts you've been listening to recently.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

Mainly old Pick Of The Pops charts with people like David Bowie and Frankie Goes To Hollywood in them.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
