New Greil Marcus book. What do you guys think? I absolute adore it, especially the part about David Thomas of Pere Ubu.

Marcus is one of those critics that changed me as a writer. So maybe my assessment is not very objective.

I haven't seen anything else on it here. I've not finished the book yet, but I heard him read from it last week and it is pretty incredible. After meeting him a few times, I can say he's also an awfully nice guy.

He is an exciting thinker. "Mystery Train" made a huge impression on me the first couple of times I read it and wasn't even equipped to ully understand it. I also like the way he hears things -- for instance, connecting the Fleetwoods to Heavens to Betsy.

Rickey: Is he doing a book tour or did he just do a reading near his home in Berkeley?

i love GM and can't wait to read this book, espec as it looks entirely different from anything he's written before.

I'm sure that there will be people on here that don't like GM, but I have a feeling he is one of the more likeable critics out there. More than XGau or others. I think that is because he really puts things in a critical and historical perspective and does some semi-academic work rather than just rattle off opinions.

Though I must say that his review of the 1970 Dylan record, Self Portrait, in Rolling Stone (when it was still relevant) which started with "What is this shit?" was pretty fabulous.
