vs ("No Excuses" vs "Burden in My Hand")

dave q (listerine), Monday, 11 September 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

jesus christ pose, obviously. this isn't anywhere near a fair fight. it's juggernaut vs jalopy.

guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 11 September 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus Christ Pose seconded.

But if we were to choose between Jesus Christ Pose and Angry Chair, I would have chosen Angry Chair.

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Monday, 11 September 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

it's been so long since I processed a Dave Q taking sides that my brain can't find the right pathways - I think this is essentially a TS between Great White & Kix though

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Man In The Box and Jesus Christ Pose are both classics.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Man in the Box" = Great White circa the first EP, which featured "On Your Knees": airplay on KNAC, groundswell of disenfranchised trucker speed gobbler support, shows in the same neighborhoods as the Mau Maus giving way to showcases in shopping malls

"Jesus Christ Pose" = "Don't Close Your Eyes" as interpreted by a guy who has thought way too hard about it

at the end of the day though Kix still owns Great White, so Soundgarden wins

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Would love to know the rationale behind this matchup, since yeah, this is a giant triumph for "Jesus Christ Pose." "Man in a Box" has always bored me, even when I was into that type of thing - and "Jesus Christ Pose" still kicks ass years later.

Tangent: an old roommate of mine thought it was "Jesus Christ Boat," prompting us to develop an entire B-movie pitch concerning a killer boat with a Jesus Christ head on the front - campers would be idly houseboating around a lake one night, then suddenly, out of the fog would come this huge boat ramming into them as the song played. I'd pay to go see that. "In a Jesus Christ Booooooooooooooooat!"

Matt was pretty good for that type of thing, generally. Soundgarden also yielded a concept for a kids' book entitled "Ugly & Me," after a misheard line from "Get On The Snake"....

exactly...even among AIC's back catalogue, 'man in the box' was something of an embarassingly moist squib.

guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 11 September 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Well, MX-80 Sound's own "Man in a Box" (which predates AIC's by a decade) is better than both, of course. But otherwise, yeah, the rumbling "JCP" takes it easily. That's my favourite Soundgarden song. (Never heard their Ohio Players cover.)

Whereas Man In the Box made me think "meh", Jesus Christ Pose made me think "I want to be listening to Barracuda right now." So Alice In Chains lose out to Soundgarden, but Heart are the moral victors.

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Dr. Casino

The rationale behind the comparison is probably--two Seattle commercial grunge singles that name drop Jesus Christ.

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Monday, 11 September 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

man in the box = 2 chord verses (almost out-"Eletric Avenue-ing" Eddy Grant himself) but the chorus is that famous G-Em-C-D combination that finds itsself rather prevalent in other Seattle grunge bands (Pearl Jam, Temple Of The Dog, Mother Love Bone, The Mountain Goats, Nirvana).

"jesus christ pose" = this song was all over my dorm freshman year. the breakdown always reminds me of "the temple" from jesus christ superstar which always left me thinking that was the origin of the name... i think pegboy covered "the temple" around this time but then the afghan whigs covered it to lesser success a year or two later.

Sneaky Shasta!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Man In the Box" fine. It's good pop with kind of a 60s thing to it. And this is still a landslide for JCP. Come on, that feedback! The layered riffs! That rhythm. The JCS reference must have been intentional and it's really funny. I'm really struggling to see the connection between Kix's power ballad (which I like OK anyway) and Soundgarden's heaviest song though.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I saw the thread title and thought, "Ugh, Alice in Chains always pissed me off, Soundgarden was at least tolerable," but then I remembered how good the chorus was for "Man in the Box" and how Chris Cornell is now in Audioslave.

So AIC wins.

Also: that chorus! Someone should do a teenpop cover of it and make the chorus all sweet and like rap the verses. It's be awesome.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

no. it's not be awesome. it's be dreadful.

guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

sundar it's a question of vibe - Don't Close Your Eyes/Jesus Christ Pose harnesses an evil sorta doomy groove, whereas On Your Knees/Man in the Box cop some garage moves to varied/generally underwhelming effect

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

while we're making ridiculous comparisons...

Man in the Box = Get the Funk Out
Jesus Christ Pose = THC Groove

i.e. JCP wins

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Get the Funk Out

was this before or after ...Twice Shy

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

after, I'm pretty sure. (I tried to listen to that cover a little while back, and just... couldn't.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

"man in the box." that riff -- bondo de rolĂȘ knows what i'm talking about.

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Monday, 11 September 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

"Man in the Box," but then again I hate grunge.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

dave q (listerine), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)
