"Non uses music as a background for his fascinating poetry."

by John Bush

"Do you want total war? Yes, you want total war!!"

Boy, that "Non" feller is a regular Ezra Pound.

I mean, I LOVE Boyd, but, c'mon...most of those songs don't even have vocals.

Wand Milius (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but he said "Non uses music as a background for his fascinating poetry," not "Non uses music as a background for his fascinating poetry ON THIS ALBUM!"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

I do like how he gets one critical perspective in there with the use of the word "fascinating."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

It's not really a judgemental perspective, though. Not "fascinatingly good" or "fascinatingly bad." Just "fascinating."

"Whitehouse frames their rhyming couplets with synthesizer music."

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

fortune city, ned?

Oh well.

poetry:

When I desire a lazy day
There's a place that I go to, not so far away
It is distant from concrete and noise and strife
And far, far removed from the frictions of life
It's a place with no pests, save for spiders and chiggers
With no loud mouth assholes or unruly niggers
Just grassy fields and brooks that babble
No witless or homeless or other such rabble
And off in my respite
Alone with the calm
I pray for spome despot
To drop the A-bomb.

it works better to the tune of "hello mudda hello fadda."

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I bought a Non album once. I actually hated it. I've really disliked albums before or have been bored by them or disappointed, but Non made me actually want to destroy it rather than just resell it. Then, I looked him up online and what I discovered made me want to destroy him, too.

Butt Dickus (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

i think the unfortunate thing about boyd/non is that he allows some really desperately stupid people with retarded sociopolitical ideas to hide beneath a veneer of intelligence and false bad-assery.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, like himself?

Butt Dickus (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

well...

man rice's bio on his website is a hoot and a half

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

The anger Rice generates has long seemed weird to me. I don't know if I could be his friend or work with him but he comes off like a fun guy in any interview with him I've read. I think he seems fascinated by binaries in different forms of popular culture and other fun juxtapositions. He also loves Jerry Lewis, 60's Girl Groups, and Tiny Tim as I do, so I have to defend him.

Are people just so conditioned antagonistically against even mere aesthetic references to Fascism? If so, that just doesn't speak well of one's overall ability to engage with art.

theodore (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

i've never really had a problem with his music because of his philosophy but since, say, 1990 the most 'transgressive' thing he's done has been that music for pussycats compilation. which fucking kills.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

I think his most 'transgressive' accomplishment has been: http://tikiboyds.com/

Baaderonixx: the lost ILX years (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

I have some of his albums, I liked them but playing with fascist imagery leaves always a bitter aftertaste. Just like seeing Joe Strummer wearing a Brigate Rosse t-shirt.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

that's awesome.

(also, his 90s stuff was pretty good, now that i think about it.)

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

he's interesting but full of shit, and he doesn't make "mere aethetic references to fascism," he openly admires fascism as a philosophy

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

that music for pussycats compilation. which fucking kills.

Agreed.
